admittedly, i'm not the sharpest knife in the cheesesteak (HA!) but i'm interested in a counter-rotating tine tiller, and i saw somewhere that the befco is both a forward and counter rotating tine tiller . . . is this possible or is it more likely, i just don't undestand tiller industry basics. am rather fearful of the rocks and stones that i know live and thrive below ground level (though, i'm only looking at tilling the top 6 inches) what say , all you kubota faithful? thanks, shrekbelly

I have never thought of, pondered, wanted, desired, or otherwise conceived of counter-rotating tines on a tiller.

I guess you could do that and REALLY tear up the earth...always a good thing...but for less money, complexity, and reliability, I'd probably just drive the other way on my next pass.

On the Befco web site, they say "forward or reverse" tilling for their smallest model...I would figure that if you wanted you could swap the gearbox to the other side and have the tines turn the other way if you wanted...hardly counter-rotating. Even in the larger models, I didn't see anything about counter-rotating tines...those that alternate tilling forward and backward on the same shaft axis.

Surprisingly, I saw an example of a Troy-Built walk-behind with counter-rotating blades. I can see the benefit here, since it is neither pulling itself forward or rearward, just digging straight down. Just don't see this as imperative on a tractor, though, since the machine is able to counteract any force the tiller can impart.

I'd just get a nice, heavy, regular tiller. Befco, Woods, Bush Hog, etc.

Think about this... It is good if you till it first rotating forward and find no rocks. But I had a counter rotating walk-behind and for the big rocks it was ok and the little were no big deal. But the ones around 5" to 7" it would pull inside and bend the sheet metal to ****...... I sold it with out the sides----they would not fit any more!

I have a Befco 66" for my tractor. They all spin the same way. But it does a fantastic job. It is a great piece of equipment. I tilled 7-8 acres or more last year....several times. I was getting a field ready that had not been planted in a long time. Forward, reverse, both, up, down, left or right...I don't care as long as it chews up the ground for me!

I also have a Befco 66". I have the T50-266. They do make a reverse tine tiller but my is a forward. Tilled 7 acres this year to. and am having it planted right now. I had to go back over it and pack it down so it could be planted.
Great piece of equipment.

While I'm not familiar with the befco tillers, I can heartily recommend a reverse cut tiller. I went with the Kubota reverse cut tiller after using forward cut tillers for many years. All I can say is I didn't know what I was missing until I used the reverse cut. It makes my soil almost like powder. As for rocks, go with a slip clutch model if available.

However, one thing to consider on a bx1850 is that a reverse cut tiller does take a little more power because it's digging in the opposite direction of the way the tractor is going where a regular tiller is sort of pushing the tractor. Of course this could be excellent justification to buy a larger tractor, then the 1850 wouldn't be lonely.
