We also have a tree full of bees, but I have never been stung and can walk all the way up to the entrance, mow around it and at one time I had a deer blind in it. I have shredded over Bumble bees living in the ground, that is a nightmare!!
Any possibility a couple of the bees from that hive are dead on your tractor? If so you can collect them into a sandwich ziplock baggie placed in the frig and they can still tell you if they are the Africanized bees.

My improvised flame thrower seemed to work pretty well and I completely destroyed the hollow bee tree without doing much damage to the surrounding vegetation.
There are still some bees flying around looking for their home but I feel confident that the queen bee never had a chance to escape.
My back is still killing me today preventing me from doing much and my wife has the burden of taking care of the animals but at least I feel a little better knowing that my revenge was carried out on those that caused me so much pain and they will never again use that tree for a lair.
Haymaker, my local hardware store does not carry tannerite but if it did that would have been an interesting option.
Jinman, If I had access to a limited range, non-radioactive nuclear device, I definitely would have considered it.

Sorry, I can not give any info on making a flame thrower. Homeland security wouldn't approve of it as I am sure they classify it with bomb making, etc.
There are probably sites on the internet where you can get this info but I wouldn't want to be responsible for the misuse of this information.

My buddy had a hollow living tree that bees had taken up residence in years ago. For a few years he let them live and let live in there with no issues. Then, they'd start stinging and chasing you on the riding mower or tractor. He's very allergic to bee stings so he rigs up a 12v sprayer on his 3155 JD (big cab tractor) FEL and mounts the wand to his hay spear. He got ahold of all the nasty bug killing chemicals he could find and mixed up a potion strong enough to make you think you need a voodoo doctor to cure you if you got a sniff. Drives up to said tree with said sprayer and said wand attached to hay spear and commences to wipe 'em out. He said he thinks a few may have been able to fly maybe 50 feet before dropping out of the air.:thumbsup:

Follow up: My back was hurting me so bad today from having the bees chase me that I finally broke down and went to the emergency room.
Diagnosis: Kidney stone. Apparently when I ran 1/4 mile for the first time in many years, the jogging motion shook loose a stone from my kidney that went down into the ureter causing excruciating pain. Cat scan shows that it is a small one and will probably pass but to expect a few more days of suffering even with the meds.
Goldarn bees.

I can relate on both levels, I have bee hives and I've had kidney stones. :laughing:
You are correct about a swarm not attacking. That was not a swarm but rather a hive and all indications are they were AHB (Africanized Honey Bees), especially given your Southern location.
