I am looking for a gift to a friend who did about $20k of free professional work for me. We have known each other for 20 years since college and have a standing rule that we only give each other beer as a gifts. This work clearly was above and beyond the call of duty and saved me and my neighbors a tone of $$. I am looking for a something like a "beer of the month club" supplier that will send him a case of international, hard to find beer each month for the next couple of years. Anybody know of such a service????

Any help or experience with such a thing would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Roger

Roger,
That is a great idea but I have never heard of such a service. My wife is an international flight attendant and is in Europe once a week. She always brings back one or two beers for me and I will ask her to look around while she is over there. We happen to be going to Scotland for the first two weeks of May so I’ll keep an eye out also. Let us know if you find anything, it sounds like the kind of gift I might give.

Roger,

A buddy of mine got a gift of two six packs a month for six months I think. Mostly pretty good stuff, though there will always be a few brews only we true consumers will be able to deal with! I don't know the name of his club, but a search on "beer of the month" turns up multiple hits. There were all American microbrews and international mixes too.

Check out http://www.realbeer.com/. They have several beer of the month clubs that you can participate in.

Thanks. www.realbeer.com is perfect. 12 beers (3 bottles of 4 different international beers) for $39/month for 12 months. Plus $95 shipping to his office each month. Total of $554. Done.

Quick, painless, easy, and a great gift for such a huge help. I'll let you all know how he likes it. This should be a perfect gift since he is a home brewer.

Thanks again,
-Roger

Roger,

I once read of another club that was providing single malt whiskey/scotch
as well. This was kinda pricey but the club would buy up casks of very
good stuff. And it was single malts that where from small companies in
the UK. I don't remember the names, its been a couple of years since
I read the article but I'm sure they are findable in yahoo.

There are also wine clubs as well.

FYI about getting booze in the mail. In some states its illegal to send
booze into the state by mail. NC is one of these wonderful states. The
reason is the state's monopoly on booze sales and the money they would
loose on a few six packs or bottles....

Were you thinking of The Scotch Malt Whiskey Society? They are indeed a bit pricey but have some good scotches. 'Course you can do better if you get over there - my favorite is Glenn Grant.

Andy,

Yep, I think that is the club. Its been a few years since I read about the
company but the location in Florida and the price seems right.

A few years ago I got a bottle of one of the Glens, can't remember the name,
from an English friend. He used to goad me because he would come to my
house and find I still had the bottle. I would drink some everyonce in awhile
but it took me a few years to finish the bottle. I bought a second bottle as
well as some good cognac and I have been working on those for quite a few
years! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I got to have my beer but the really hard stuff I only get a hankering for
every once and awhile. Which is likely a good think money wise! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

The article I read was in the Wall Street Journal for whatever that is worth.

But if someone did $20K worth of work for me and they like good Scotch this
sure seems like a good gift.

We live only a few miles from the Tomatin distillery in Scotland, I have been on a visit once with my father in law and it was quite interesting. He really likes this particular one but I can't stand any of it. Give me a nice ice cold bottle of Bud or glass or two of red wine any day /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

For anyone who is interested here is a link Distillery . They don't have a web site but it gives a bit of information.

MarkV, if you click on the 'Back to Highland map' link you can also see other distilleries in the area which you may like to visit when you are over.

Great site, thanks. We do most of our wanderings around Ardtornish and Drimnen, just north of Mull. Haven't been up the the northern, or for that matter the eastern, highlands. Would love to do a distillery tour (preferrably with someone else driving/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

My first real introduction to single malts was on our honeymoon. We stayed at an inn owned by my wifes landlord and after dinner were introduced to the pleasures in their small pub. One wall was filled with single malts and they instructed us in the various flavours and such. Needless to say it was a painless/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif lesson.

I still prefer my beers (used to brew but lost the time) but a wee dram once in a while is a great thing.
