I wouldn't even consider sitting there waiting for a shot.

Wrap everything you want to keep. They'll move on when there's nothing left available.

That can take a long time.

The part about running out of trees to eat. (They also love corn.)

If the OP does go with Conibears he might also consider buying or making a spring setting tool. I hadn't set a 330 in 20 years but always did it easily by hand; tonight I discovered that those springs are a lot stronger than they used to be. ;)

In Canada beaver are a protected species but may be trapped by a licensed trapper.
Pelts are not worth enough to be attractive.
On our lake they have been taking down trees and the local trappers want $200 each.
My desired trees have the mesh protection, I use stucco mesh or soldered hardware cloth and wrap somewhat loosely as trees do grow.

One good deterrent is destroy their dam and then lay 5-6 inch stove pipe under it with a 'T' (or even 3 Tees) in the upstream section.
The idea of the Tees is to fool them as to where the leak is. Believe me it works.

One time on a very calm evening we laid in wait to shoot them as they'd come to repair the dam.
I counted about 20 beaver swimming to towards the dam site to effect repairs.
They somehow communicate and make up a work party.
We used shot guns as there were many local cottages and as you know bullets skip on the water.
A beavers hearing is so keen that at the 'click' of a trigger he'd dive before the shot got to him.

They generally make dams and cut trees after nightfall as a general rule. (or perhaps they have night shifts, LOL)

Conibears are easy and deadly for beavers. But when set on dirt, they will catch anything...raccoons, otters, coyotes, dogs, cats, turtles. So you have to be careful where you use them. Also check your local laws. But I was a beginner trapper, and quickly learned to trap beavers with this effective trap.

I wouldn't even think about setting a Conibear on land; they aren't forgiving at all. Your dog can be a perfect gentleman, staying by your side and still get caught in one. The only exception is the smallest size; 110 or 120, which we used to set in cubby traps for marten until it became illegal due to the Canada Lynx.

I can't remember what guy used once to make the beaver leave  but it left light skim on top of water in which beaver eyes didn't like...didn't hurt the fish nor water.

We have beavers constantly probing and attacking our boat house and surrounding trees.

They stuff sticks under the boathouse superstructure, and then we have to drag it all out. They even started building a lodge inside one of the boathouse side buildings.

We first discovered them through years ago, when they felled two trees that fell on my trailer and dented one fender.

Then we discovered that they had started to cut down numerous other poplar trees, so I had to hire someone to come in and cut down a total of 17 big trees. Cost me some $2000. Now, I constantly have an LED light on, and a radio tuned to the CBC, which is pretty much talk radio.

As well, I wrap the base of any tree that is at risk, using either roofers tin, or chicken wire.

It is a constant battle. We had a guy trap several of them, and then he unfortunately died. And yes, Conibear traps are very dangerous to other wildlife, and even our dog.

I hate beavers! IMG_9649.JPG

In Quebec in order to trap you need to take a 2 week course to get your trappers license.
Trapping without that permit gets very costly.

BUT to cut a dead tree a city permit is required! go figure.
LOL, I know folks that can chainsaw a tree and make it look like beaver teeth did it.
(The city inspectors quit at noon on Fridays, chain saws start at 1:00PM)
