Enjoying the "newness" of my old tractor!

learning as I go and this forum and it members have been very helpful,THANK YOU!

My Beaver has AG tires on it and I'll be running on the lawn quite a bit so need to go to a turf option. I saw some great threads on using truck tires as a less expensive option and talked to a local dealer that was very helpful in letting me know how to make sure I'm getting the correct sizes together so I don't do damage to my 4WD. He talked me through an easy way to determine the correct tire ratio but as the tractors new to me...how do I know the last guy put the correct size on? Hmmmm...

I don't mind going a little smaller, I have a sports car to go fast in!

So does anyone know the correct front to rear tire ratio for my S-370D? It will also help me determine if what I have on the tractor now is OK.

He was suggesting something in a 225-75/16 as a starting size?

Thanks in advance

Phil

The brochure for the S-370 says the 4 wheel drive has 5-12 tires up front and 8-16 tires in the rear. 5-12 tires have a rolling circumference of about 62 inches. 8-16 tires have a rolling circumference of about 92 inches. As long as that proportion is maintained ( 62/92 ) with the new tires, and they clear the tractor, you should be fine.

If you end up swapping wheels, make sure you post what fits or doesn't fit. I'm curious what you end up doing for the front.

I just took one of my rear tires with me and matched it to a used pickup tire roughly the same height. You're probably not going to be in 4wd much anyway. I use mine when I mow down into a roadside ditch and have to back up out of it. When I'm clear I go back to 2wd. Mine is a grey and had the rice tires so it was pretty urgent for me to switch. I still have a Buck with ag tires.

Thanks guy's,

Good info. I'll also mark the tires at 12:00 and count off 10 rotaions to see what's on now with wear and all. Up here in New England I'll be using the 4WD for snow removal and I also have a bunch of hills to tackle. The little Beaver seems to have some decent touque, just gotta keep it in it's power range.
When I land on a set I'll post the results for those not looking to spend a fortune on new tractor sneekers. I paid $2k for the tractor, loader & rake so paying $800+ for a set of turfs isn't what I want to do!

Cheers!

Remember that the front tires are supposed to lead the rear tires, by spinning roughly 2% to 5% faster. If I were going to do it, I would put the tractor in 4wd, jack up one side of the tractor, so the opposite tires are both on the ground, then mark the front and rear tires in a convenient spot, then spin the front (or rear, whatever is easier) tire 10 or 20 revolutions, and count revolutions. Then you have a mechanical comparison that will give you the specific lead desired with the correct tire combination for the tractor, and don't have to deal with slippage between sides while driving.

Thanks folks,

There are some good posts from prior owners that have been great at sorting some of the info needed here. The guy at the tire place I spoke with works on tractors and told me to mark the tires as well. He said to chalk the front & rear at 12 oclock and drive slow while someone counts 10 revs on the front while keeping track of how many the rears have completed. This will give you your "lead" ratio:)
