Bear on the front porch and now also in the barn

The owners of a fly in fishing camp up in Canada made 3'x3' boards with long nails driven thru on about a 1.5" grid to lay down under windows and doors to bear proof the entrances. You sure had to remember to step around them at the doors though.
That would likely keep them away from your barn door.

I am sure if you talked to the Fish and Game folks about your nuisance bear they would come trap it for you OR give you permission to shoot it if it is constantly breaking into your shed.

The only suggestion offered for California side of Lake Tahoe was to electrify the perimeter... said Fish and Game or Law Enforcement does not get involved unless someone is injured as it generates a lot of negative press.

Don't even know what it would take to dispatch a bear?

Deer rifle or a 45 head shot at close range?

I encounter black bears in the wilderness somewhat often when hiking/fishing remote streams. Never had a problem; never had one charge me. I have lost some camping gear and been nervous a few times though .....

As stated, those bears have a natural fear of people. These bears, well, maybe not so.

I'm going to start carrying a can of bear spray with me. If I needed to kill one I would use my .45/70 rifle, but I don't want to do that. I think these bears need to be relocated. I will investigate if I can make that happen.

Trying to decide what setup to use on coyotes. I have a Henry's 22WMR magnum, a Mini-14 (.223), and a Springfield M1A .308. I've been learning about their routines with some game cams and seems like they are out at lot at 3am. I have some equipment that would work for night shots. Not sure I want to sit up at 3am in the cold trying for a shot. If I used night vision equipment I'd probably need to use the .223 caliber gun.

There's also non-lethal (rubber, etc..) 12 gauge buckshot, slugs etc...

Don't think it would take too many training encounters for them to get the message....

Can't help with bears. However, have lots of coyotes and coywolves (Eastern Coyotes) around here. Agreed they don't like gunfire or even the smell of gunpowder. In the spring, when they den up with pups, they are more resistant to moving. Individuals use calls here for coyotes. A lot of work/fun depending on what you like to do. They are amazingly smart! Trapping seems to be the best way to eliminate them. Property across/next to me has a trapper. In one week, he trapped seven coyotes there and two on the property north of me. Stopped by to see me the other day. He does it for free for the pelts. I don't know what the hunting/trapping laws are in your area. But, maybe you could find a trapper and save yourself having to get up at 3AM to hunt them.
