Heard quite a cry for help from one of our wild neighbors. I ran to see what was going on and allmost fell over a momma doe trying to fend off a black bear from her fawn. I tried to get the fawn away but the bear clamped down it's jaws and ran deep into the woods. Sad thing to watch, I enjoy all the wild critters especially bear and deer. It is the law of the wild though and the circle of life.

That's amazing that you actually witnessed it. I've heard of similar incidents and have even seen videos, but never seen it first hand.

Sorry that you weren't able to save the fawn. Did the doe emit sounds like "Baa", similar to sheep, to alert you to the danger?

My friend was raking hay for me back when she was 16 and saw a fawn run out into the field with a coyote chasing it. She called me up in tears as the coyote caught it but there was nothing I could do since I was in a different field cutting. Its a sad but it is nature and a part of nature that we need to respect. Without the predators we would be in a very bad situation, deer are very easy to overpopulate and when that happens they destroy the understory of the woods where they live. They will kill off all the brush and just keep eating anything they can find. We fence in brush fields for our pens and 4 deer will easily kill off every tree (4" or smaller) and brush in there within 2 years and that is with them having a constant food supply along with grass to eat. Now our pens are great for mowing since there is nothing to mow around but only a few of the original big trees are left for shade for them outside of the sheds we built. Its just amazing how fast they can destroy their habitat.

Pa did a bear/fawn mortality study a number of years ago, and IIRC they were quite surprised to discover the large number of fawns that were taken within the first few weeks of being born. The black bears were a significant influence.

Don't know about the Adirondacks/NY, but we have too many bears in Pa.

Bear huntimg is big business up here... guides put out bait using old pastries and molasses, then sports come up and hunt them in the fall. As the bear population has risen over the last 30 years coyotes have moved in also: meanwhile our deer population has plummetted.

Creekbend: I was actually more worried about the doe hitting me. I got inbetween her and the bear, she stayed very close, close enough I could have reached out and touched her. The whole time she was by me she was grunting and kicking. I wish I could have done more for her but I'm not in good shape(very bad back). When the bear darted into the woods she was hot on it's butt.

Robert in NY; Our deer population has taken a nose dive in the past few years(this area), coyotes have become a problem. I normally would not get involved, I respect nature and how things are done, but the look in momma doe's eyes was straight up fear. At one time it wood be nothing to see 30-40 deer in our back yard, now we're lucky if we see 5 to 8. It really isn't the bears fault and it does need it's fair share of food. To bad the bear wouldn't go after the coyotes.
