I've got a (borrowed, ugh) BCS 830 which decided to cause me some grief... one of the studs that holds the tiller on backed out (it was not attached with lock washers), and in the process one of the 3 dogs on the end of the PTO shaft got broken off.

My question is this - how big a deal is this? It seems to me that the load is probably only being carried by one of the dogs anyway, and the PTO rotation isn't fast enough for vibration to be an issue...

I'm happy to fix it if it needs to be fixed, or if it causes trouble down the line, but it would be nice to skip a (~$300?) repair job if it's not really needed.

Any thoughts?

Hi! In short time may be no problem. But for a long time . The load or pressure will go more on side of shaft this will with time make more wear on side of bearing and PTO gear. Good Luck! Oldmech

That is just some bad luck on your part!

Honest Communication is the answer. Explain the situation to the owner and possibly he/she may aide in the repair(Money/Labor).

Life's too short to worry about the small crap!!!

Good Luck and let us know what happens,
Grut
