Right. So mobile phones weren't a thing until >50% of the population owned one.

I was defining what a sea change is...and yeah...over >50% of the people having mobile phones is the definition of a sea change.

Don’t forget about cordless power tools. How many corded vs. uncorded tools are sold today compared to 25 years ago. We’re on the front side of the EV bell curve of adoption, with a rapid rise in front of us. Adoption accelerates quickly when it happens. It’s not a linear progression.

Cordless power tools make a lot of sense...

But the example does not extend into transportation though...

What fascinates me is an inventor friend (rip) used to say there was a point in history, the 1800s & Industrial revolution where we had two technological advance choices: electrical or mechanical.
Pneumatic air tubes were invented in 1799 and used in big cities, even large ones to carry mail and packages. One inventor in the 1800s to prove how safe they were sent his own son through a large one:
"To prove how effective and safe it was, he put his own son, Robert, inside one of the canisters.
The boy had one word for reporters afterward: “Whew!”"
I always thought what a ride that must of been.
We still use them all the time at our bank drive thru.

How do you know the sales figures in 2021 when 2021 is not over yet. Those usually come out in February.

Sea change usually means a plurality so...>50%.
When all your arguments are semantics.

Sea change or sea-change is an English idiomatic expression which denotes a substantial change in perspective, especially one which affects a group or society at large, on a particular issue.

I defined it as a plurality and >50%. Pretty sure that is not semantics.

You can disagree on the merits of those defining characteristics, but trying to triangulate it to an "English idiomatic expression" is semanticy...

2% was last years numbers and only for the US. This year it more than doubled to over 5%, and globally about 1 out of every 12 cars sold is an EV. In Europe 1 out of every 4 new cars sold is an EV. What growth rate/market share numbers do we need to qualify it being a sea change?
Yep no one is seriously questioning the fact that the EV revolution train has left the station and is only gaining speed. From time to time there will be the flat earth types air but they know it's over for the internal combustion engine for personal transportation needs and school buses.
