You might be referring to the $25,000 version that Elon Musk has announced and it is actually in development phase in the China factory today. In fact they built a special area for research and development of that car. One thing that troubles Elon Musk is the price of his vehicles are out of reach for many.
Good luck selling into the Chinese market.

As I've stated previously, the US market is essentially flooded. Even IF forced consumerism (via legislation) that don't mean that people can still afford a change in their vehicles.

To be truly safe they will need to use multiple technologies.
"Truly safe" for what, profits or for human lives?

Cameras will have to be positioned inside your garage to capture the start to finish of your voyage. It's for YOUR safety, don't ya know!

Technology always comes with nefarious uses. One "oopsie" and most of humanity can be wiped out in a matter of minutes. Every nuclear reactor which has melted down was at one time pitched as being "truly safe." Oh! But we have newer technologies so that won't happen: refer to my closing paragraph).

I had an encounter with deer on the road that wouldn't have ended up as good as it did had AI been involved. Are cameras/sensors going to be positioned all along rural roads?

My take: these extra "safety" measures will increase the costs of private transportation such that private transportation will be reduced and nearly eliminated, except for the wealthy. The low number of fatalities on the roadways will be heralded as a success, proof that technology works! Meanwhile people will be popping off their fellow house dwellers due to being locked up in their homes.

Don't discount the power of human hubris.

Your linked article states, "Sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs), including battery-powered electric vehicles, plug-in petrol-electric hybrids, and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, surged 181.9 percent to 321,000 units."

Why do you think Tesla has a 6 month backlog for some of their cars in the USA?

The last of the three mentioned is about the $25,000 Tesla.

A rocket scientist with no common sense and a desire for personal gain.

I am not a litigious person but I can promise that if a self-driving vehicle ever hits me or one of my family members I will hire the most powerful lawyer I can afford and go for every penny I can get.

It is shear stupidity that mankind is pushing as hard as they can to get rid of any purpose of our own existence. The movie WALL-e was eerily accurate in it's portrayal of future society. A bunch of fat, lazy slobs sitting around being cared for by machines. What a pathetic existence.
Read The Myth of the Machine (two book series) by Lewis Mumford. History as precursor to the future... (last publication date was 1970- brilliant thinker and historian)

PETROL-ELECTRIC HYBRIDS. Battery-powered vehicles- could they also be including golf carts?

Maybe the backlog has something to do with the COVID-19 induced supply-chain backlog?

Until self-driving tractor-trailers can be 100% safe (that means anticipating other drivers and avoiding such situations), I don't think I'd want a truck weighing 20 tons plus on the road.
When these trucks are developed, I hope they're limited to 45-50 MPH the the slow lanes
Roy, you've got it all wrong. NO humans will be driving anything (well, the rich always manage to build-in an exception). Everything will be controlled. It'll be like being on an amusement park ride.

We cannot trust people to drive yet we trust them to build systems that can "protect us." Gotta love human hubris...

Did you even read the article you linked us to?

Here is an excerpt from the end.

"SpaceX has yet to comment on this partnership — so there’s a chance that it might not even come to fruition.

However, Reid said that GEC had been vying for the aeronautics company’s attention since 2018. It wasn’t until Reid taught a few of Musk’s kids at the Ad Astra school that the company heard his proposal, according to Insider.

So take this all with a grain of salt. However, if it goes through, it’ll mark a rather foreboding milestone. After all, not even the stars and galaxies we all gaze at will be safe from the dark maw of capitalism."

Some dude just proposed the idea to him....

Sounds like Ford EVs are getting traction.

There are some really interesting studies on speed, distance and traffic loads.

It will take a rocket scientist to develop the algorithms to generate the vehicles speed to a given point.

Why go 70mph only to sit in traffic for two hours at a given congestion point. It may be optimal to go 45 so that by the time you get to the congestion point, there is no congestion. Same distance, more efficient flow and less congestion.

Shout out to the Hokie Nation.

VaTech was a customer of mine. They call the grads toolies because they are engineers and work with tools.

Universities are the biggest PITA because they want everything for....FREE, donate for the good of the nation.

because they are constantly broke.

Ha...took a while to figure that one out...they got plenty of money.

In the 80s Va Tech built a short length of the "highway of the future" outside of Blacksburg. I guess it was embedded with all kinds of sensors etc etc. I think they could make it rain and possibly freeze it also?

At that time they were the big dog in that business.
