Bat Control

I'm interested by your comment about in the sun. Is the best place for a bat house in the sun or in the shade? I would have thought that since bats are traditionally thought of as nesting in caves, that a sunny spot for a bat house might get uncomfortably hot. Or, would a bat happily take a toasty warm spot to snooze in if offered? Surely there are design principles involved that would suggest a high or low amount of convective air flow through the bat house.

John

I'm no bat expert, but I know that bats raising young like the heat. Ever stick your head up in the attic in the summertime? So I have always painted my bat houses houses black and located them where they get sun.

So if I build it, will the come? :) I've been thinking about putting up bat houses because we have so many mosquitos. Is building a house enough or do I need to find a source for bats, too? Hey...I know nothing about bats. Had to ask!

If the population of bats is increasing, doesn't that mean that they have to be finding food to support those numbers? Since they eat mosquitoes, would it be safe to say that they are cutting down on their numbers? The more bats that you have, the fewer mosquitoes that you have.

No matter how beneficial they are, you have to get them out of the house. I would make that priority number one!!!! Some sealants work, but others are too easy for them to eat away. Once you block the entrance, they will make an effort to open it again. If they fail, then they will find another place.

I just replaced the soffits on a house that a racoon was able to get into. The homeowner hired an animal control expert who sealed up the opening with wire. They then started chewing through the wood and creating other openings. He finally killed them after a month long battle. Cost was $800 to the homeowner, plus my bill to replace the wood. While racoons and bats have nothing to do with each other, it's still interesting.

Here's everything you could want to know about bats

And remember, anytime you find a bat in the house you are supposed to go through that rabies post exposure treatment. People have died from rabies that did not realize they were bitten while they slept...
