Ballast Ballast box or Filled tires?

I was wondering how long it would take someone to catch that....I guess not very long at all. You're right, there is friction between the ballast box and AIR. Only a perfect vacuum would solve that!

The real question is does a Mahindra or New Holland, driven in high range at full speed, appear to change color to a stationary observer (depending on direction of movement).

While there is no arguing the merits of filled tires, if you have a wet yard / soft turf, I highly recommend you use a ballast box. While the ballast box does not keep the weight right on the tires, as is the case with loaded tires, the advantage of being able to take the weight of the tractor is key for me. So far, I have never had a time where I said "I wished I had loaded tires". My brother's new Kubota is about to have the loaded tires unloaded due to his wet yard /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I have a JD4300HST that started off with air in the R4 tires, until the weather warmed up enough for me to load them (WWF). I found that I could run with less tire pressure giving better traction and a softer ride while still protecting the sidewalls.(and the grass) The juice takes up most of the volume, leaving only a small amount of air to compress and firm up when you go over a rock.(we got lots of them) The tractor doesn't bounce the way a ballast box does when hanging on the 3pth but you can still add an implement. I spend a lot of time hauling logs etc so have a receiver hitch with weights and chain hooks that goes on the 3ph for trailer moving. I drop the trailer in the bush then use the forks to load logs, glad of the tire weight as well as the removeable cast weights...Pat
