Bad PTO Solenoid?

I do not think I can purge the circuit after putting the valve back in - is that ok?

And I assume I just take the solenoid off and then loosen the hex at the base of the shaft where the block is?

Ken

There is no need to purge air from the circuit.

You are correct about removing the valve/solenoid. First remove the coil and then remove the valve/solenoid unit. The coil can be reassembled on the valve/solenoid outside the block to test action of the valve.

You will need a plug when you remove the valve/solenoid to prevent fluid from leaking. My recollection is that it is an SAE fitting with O ring.

Hey guys, I just went through this ****.

Ken, first, call me.... I have 2 spare Solenoids. I really doubt it is the solenoid.

Do you hear it clunk when you flip the switch? Or if you put a screwdriver next to it does it pull it in a bit?

Second, the nut and the end. Just a scootch over finger tighten.

Third, Apparently if you get rust in between the Solenoid and the activator rod it can cause problems.

Fourth. It took me forever to diagnose a plugged Activator... I had a chunk of debris in it that allowed it to only turn just a bit on.

Also, it could be on your mower / connector side of things.

I will PM you with my number (but any of you guys can have it - just have to ask).

A few months after I received my PG-425 in 2004, Terry sent me a new PTO valve; I had never used it as I have no powered attachments, and it was sent to me with no input on my part.

He said to swap it out and send the old one back. No charge for any of this.

Still have never used it, but I'm mentioning this to say that there must have been quite a problem with them to send one for a repair I didn't know I needed!!!

Still don't know of the new one works, and probably never will since there's nothing to mow where I live!

Tore the valve out and hooked it back together outside of the block and it was not working (no movement, but magnetized). I tried moving the plunger in and out and after a while it started moving. Not sure i am getting the full range of movement that I should since the ports only open 1/3 of the way but i put it back in and I was able to bush hog for 3 hrs.

Thanks everyone for their help!!!

Great? Did you lube it or do anythng other than exercise it?

I had similar problems with my PTO solenoid. Took it off and messed around with it until it started working. Worked for a while than stopped "clicking" again. If it tapped it with a rubber mallet, it usually started working again for a short while. I only fixed it completely by calling PT and getting a replacement.

The big thing is making sure your mower is running at speed. Mine ran, but very slowly... It was because the PTO was blocked and did not fully open.

But, they do not open very far. This has been my conundrum with hydraulics. The hose is 3./4" ID. The pressure is 3000 and the GPM is 18.. It seems like a **** of a lot to get through such a small valve. I wonder how much is lost with such a poor design (IMO poor design).

I tried tapping but that did not work.

i just tried moving it by hand a bunch of times and it freed up. My PTO has not run in almost a year and that may have been the problem, maybe it was hung up/stuck from sitting around.

I should have taken a picture (maybe i will pull out the old one - they sent me my old parts from when they went over it and replaced what needed to be replaced). There were two sets of double plastic (teflon?) seals if i remember correctly. One set was cut at a 45, the other was not. Might have to do with installing the seals and too much in the way for the inner ones.

And Carl is right, those holes are tiny. And they do not even get uncovered completely on mine. But I was able to chop up 3" trees that needed removing. However I did not find anything interesting with my bush hog like Carl does!
