What about gophers that ferry parts/supplies to the job or the night watchman?

One of the traditionally lowest paid inside jobs is reception... studies have shown reception/operators often form public opinion... which makes it very important.

A little off topic...

When I was working production at a Tool and Die shop the boss came out to the floor and pulled me off the job saying he needs me to take the company truck and make a delivery to a customer that was waiting... took off my apron and went to the dock and made the delivery and came back.

I was not back long before the boss was out on the shop floor and said didn't I tell you to make a delivery so why are you still here? I said delivery made and paperwork turned in...

From that moment on the Boss never questioned me again... seems the regular delivery driver who was out sick would have been gone half the morning... oh well.

Hahaha reminds me of a job I took as a delivery/route driver for a wholesale florist between permanent jobs back right after we got married. First couple days I rode with the regular driver to learn the route and meet the customers. First couple days on my own I kept arriving back at the shop before lunch. Owner asked me if I was a speeder? I said no, not in your truck with your name on the side of it. He asked why I was finishing my route an hour earlier than the regular driver? I said "I don't know?" The regular driver started giving me dirty looks. Turns out she was goofing off on the route on a regular basis.

Yep, I was an overachiever on my first job, told by the regulars to slow down.

I had the same experience. "They won't hire us any more help if you keep doing all the stuff not in your job description".

Yep, I was an overachiever on my first job, told by the regulars to slow down.

Yep... shop steward came up to me once and turned off my machine saying didn't you hear the buzzer... I said yes but a couple of minutes the order would have been completed...

He said don't do it again...

It was a Union Shop with many highly skilled craftsman... some having gone through apprenticeships in Germany and Switzerland... but rules are rules.

Overtime was by seniority so didn't get much... but I did get along well with everyone. Being the new person I had to clean out all the machines... one of the old-timers said most of us started doing the same... I said no problem and he said I think you are going to do just fine here.

Learned a lot about respect... maybe the most valuable lesson is people can choose to be helpful or not... thankfully, I was around many that were...

I was at the local ACE this morning... busy place on Saturday... plenty of floor help and 5 cashiers... one line that moves to the next available... I was thinking how great it was to get in and get out in minutes even with a full house... plus parking is easy.

The cashiers are good too... they are accurate and fast with instant back-up from the floor.... place isn't a city block or anything but been their since the 1930's...

I have to drive past a well stocked Old time independent hardware store and close to a large modern locally owned Ace to get to my local Lowe’s.
Consequently more often than not I shop at one or the other of the two.

Why do they (or any store) have 7/8" ID flat washers, but no 7/8" bolts or nuts?

True Value is where I got the 7/8" bolts, nuts, washers and lock washers.

I go to the local store to avoid going to Lowes or HD. The best part is that their prices are the same or slightly lower than the big guys.

Hey, that happened to me more than once.
First job was 'pick and shovel' at minimum wages.
Boy did they tear a strip off me.
I had to learn how to lean on a shovel and rest.

Later years as a sales rep the boss gave me **** as I was making way too many calls. (like I saw 10-12 clients a day)
I was told to not exceed 6 as it made others look bad.
So I continued my way and took every Friday off.

I see Rona is closing a bunch here in Nova Scotia as well as across Canada as well, I think they're owned by Lowes................Mike

Talk about overachieving, I learned that lesson from the good ol union boys when I was 18. I was paid a visit by a few fellow coworkers that advised me an accident might happen to me if I don't slow down.

Then it was explained to me that the union, and workers, fought extremely hard to have the quotas set where they were and that me doing more jeopardizes that. Plus it was making them all look bad.

They reitered it would be a machine related accident which might or might not result in serious consequences. These machine could remove appendages in microseconds.

Needless to say...I slowed my roll!! At least they explained the rules, others aren't so nice about learnin ya.

WRT lowes and home depot, the ones close to me do try to hire former contractors for departments like plumbing, flooring, and some of the trade work. It's been very helpful for me, I'm still doing a lot of things for the first time.

I shop where I can get the lowest price, equal quality items and reasonably good service, be it local store, big box, or internet. Depending upon the timeline, sometimes convenience is the deciding factor. ;)

Ay my Lowe’s store the garden center is almost all contract employees.

Guess I wouldn't make a very good union man, have no use for that mentality.

Do you have a Marden's near you? Couple times a year we'll make a trip to the one in Rumford. One of the best selections of hardware I've come across, and the prices are good too (wife likes the selection of fabric).
It's a long enough drive so we're not really saving any money by going there, but it's a cool store and a nice Sunday drive.

Same here. I'm all for supporting local businesses but not if they're gouging me. Besides, it's about the same distance for me to go to a "local" store as it is for Lowes or HD.

My options are a Lowe’s, 2 ace hardware stores one of which is pretty large, and an independent dedicated lumber shop. The lumber store has the best quality lumber so I try to shop there for lumber. I’ll stop at one of the ace hardwares if it’s convenient but having more selection and open longer it’s usually Lowe’s for the win.

I have Mardens in 3 directions, they are a great place to get tarps. I also stocked up on nuts and bolts years ago and very rarely buy them now. I bought lumber for one of my sheds at the Brewer store years ago... I had to pay for it first then somebody went out to help me load it. As we went out he said “some people let you pick through the pile but I say this is Mardens, you get what is there.”
We got out there and he tried to give me what everybody else had rejected but I said no way. Field run is one thing, but I wasn’t about to take the junk because everybody else had picked the pile.

Not with the MyLowes card, unless something has changed in the last few weeks.

Well, all I can say id that I ordered on line and got no Military Discount, I have a MyLowes Card and verified through ID.me... I had to go in the store to pick up the order and then it took time to change... "something" allowing me a credit for the discount.

I was told at that time too many people were using their Military Discount for friends and family; something I always thought of but never had to do because my Son-in-Law is Marine !

So IF no one else is getting the run around, I will take it up with my local store.

Thanks for listening to my story and Lowe's.

I dont use self check out, Im not a store employee nor do I get paid for pretending to be one.
The 2 x I used it at home depot, the machine went bonkers and had to be fixed in the middle of a lot of purchases.
I waited for 15 minutes until they figured it out and fixed what was wrong with it.
No more for me...

Too bad you dint need all the stuff. you could have left it for them to put back. The only problem with this is that it doesnt have the desired effect. The manager will just get someone to put it away.I usually ''ask'' for a manager to carry my stuff out. lol

For everyday shopping, Menards gets most of my business of the 3 big box stores. I do use HD more now, going there for better quality brands or hard to find items. But I also find HD online shopping much better than the others. For example, I'm looking for a specific Dewalt saw and a better quality Delta kitchen faucet. HD has them both 'in stock' and has the best prices. But here's the best part... if I order either one by 3:00 pm today, I'll have it tomorrow morning with free shipping via FedEx. I'm in a rural area, and service like that is rare from anyone. That fast free delivery has me hooked, and I find myself looking at their site more and more for those items no one stocks in the stores.

Following up on this... I ordered from HD Wednesday afternoon, and FedEx delivered my package Thursday morning. Free shipping in under 24hours. It's not always that quick though, especially if it has to come from the west coast. But most of my HD orders come from one of the main distribution centers that are relatively close to me. I've ordered 3 times from them in the past week due to their great service.
