There are days when you feel like you just took a couple stupid pills when you got out of bed. Today was one of them.

To make a long story short, I way overheated my TC 35D. Like stalled the engine hot.

So now its back home and I'm fixing the radiator. I did get it fired up and noticed I'm getting more blow by out the crankcase vent then normal. Ran o.k. but seemed to have a slight lope to the idle, which can't be a good thing on an injected diesel. No sign of water in the oil or external water leaks (other then the gusher coming from the radiator) I'm afraid I may have a head gasket issue or something similar, although I've only begun to try and figure out what's going on. No signs of water in the exhaust yet either.

I'm hoping it will all be a no big deal, but as these things go, it will end up being something major.

Anyone have the experience of getting one of these babies really hot and having to deal with the consequences? I'm curious what I might have in store for my weekend.

Possible you overheated the piston rings, and they loss a bit of tension, or worn rapidly. It doesn't sound good. Were you watching your temp gauge, and where was it before you quit?

Fix the radiator, change oil and filter and see how it runs.

We all have them kinda days. My past summer has been full of them so don't feel lonely.

Some thoughts.

I'd agree.. change the oil, flush / fix the radiator ( why'd it overheat? plugged up? ? Loss of water/leak? )..

Also.. overheating can be brutal to rings.. that's my guess on the blowby..

If it were me.. i think I'd have my mechanic put in a head gasket, drop the pan.. check the mains ( just to be on the safe side ), and slap some new rings on. it will bea little bit of money for the 'in block' ring swap out... but it will give you piece of mind if/when they don't see anything else while doing it.. And it will be cheaper than a full rebuild.. and in the end will be better than running it with lower compression.. ( less power / fuel economy.. etc. and head gasket may let go at any time after that ordeal..)

This will let your mechanic check the cyl walls for any scoring as well..

Soundguy is giving you good advice. But before the head comes off, I would try and get a diesel compression tester and see just where you stand. Post the numbers, A little more blowby can be tolerated....not liked, just something to live with. Now where SG gives good advie is checking the mains....get a gauge onto the engie and see what the oil pressure is. If you have excessive wear there, then yes, you are on your way to an inframe freshen up rebuild most likely. This is where running synthetic oil buys you a bit of insurance......bit of overheating, no problem for Mobil 1, Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple. How do I know this. My heater core cut loose in my Passat in the mountains. Temp gauge screamed up wards into don't be here long zone. Let engine cool down, filled radiator and limped home. Everything was fine.

If it runs and you can't really tell anything was seriously wrong, put it up for sale. When you sell it, it becomes somebody else's problem.

Okay, that's all the the smiley suggestions I could come up with.

I think you should change oil and filter and continue to run the tractor to see if there are major issues. Are you sure the blowby is more or is it that you feel guilty and are a little paranoid? Did you pay attention to the blowby before this happened? I know for myself that I would be hearing and seeing all kinds of things for awhile just because I knew what I did. If the tractor runs okay after a couple of weeks, then you probably "dodged a bullet." If it becomes worse or shows definite performance degradation, then you may need to take positive action to get it checked and fixed.

I agree with Jinman; after we have something happen, we hear and see all kinds of things. Don"t fix what is not broken. If it is running now; I am sure you will be watching and listening closely for a while. If it starts to act up, then you can address the problems.
Neighbor ran his 1320 New Holland out of fuel; called me and asked how to restart it, I told him to refuel and bleed injector pump. He dideverything and drove it over to my house; as he pulled up to me it was rattling like I never heard one rattle before ; he shut it off and said it started doing it about 20 seconds after it started and that is why he brought it over; I guess it ran for about 3 minutes. I opened the fuel tank and smelled the gasolene. He filledit with gas, proceeded to bleed it and never smelled gas. Anyway; we drained tank, refilled, rebleed and started it; ran fine ever since and thatn was 6 years ago. I thought for sure, damage was done.

Can't hurt to take the advice of changing the oil.

Several years back on a former diesel, my wife was operating the rig when the fan belt let go. She didn't come get me until she noticed steam coming from the radiator vent.

Never saw any permanent damage to the engine as a result though.




With a little luck you'll be OK
