Backhoes?

/ Backhoes? #31
Scott and Taylor,

I did a google search for Terex backhoes and found your excellent discussion here. Have either of you heard about any problems or weak points on the Terex hoes? I just bought an 860SB to use on my farm at an auction last week. It seems to be in great shape and the people I spoke with about it and Terex hoes in general had nothing but good things to say about them. Its a 2002 model with 1225 hours, 4 post canopy, 4X4 and extend-a-hoe w/36" bucket.

I like the looks of the machine in that it seems to be built pretty heavy and has much better ground clearance than any Case or Deere I've ever been around. Finding parts is a concern but I know there are dealers in Little Rock and Memphis (I'm about half way inbetween) so hopefully that won't be an issue.

Take care,
Russell

Welcome! Nice to see some East AR folk on here. We seem to be in the minority.

The 860 is the high HP version of the 760 best I can tell.
They also make an 870 which appears to be a bigger frame size. I've never seen an 870 in person though.

I looked at the 760s in Memphis and they looked pretty nice.

The only two things that concern me is parts availablity over the long haul. My current compact tractor is an '85-'87 vintage so I'm not one to give up on a machine. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Best I can tell, the important parts are mostly generic, Perkins engine, Carraro axles etc.. I dunno who makes the trans, but I suspect it's a mainline aftermarket company.

The last thing would be resale value or lack thereof. I don't forsee it as a major problem as I'll likely wear it out before it's sold anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks for the welcome Scott. I know the 860SB is a slightly heavier machine than a 760 according to Terex's website and comes with larger rubber. I'm not sure what the SB denotes. I read somewhere it meant side-shift backhoe but mine is a fixed center mount so I'm still in the dark on that.

I guess I'm glad they have low resale because that's what allowed me to be able to buy this one in the first place. I got it for the same price as I was finding 98 model Case and NH hoes with many more hours. The 860 is a considerably larger machine than the 580SL or 555E to boot. Like you mentioned, I usually keep equipment until it's scrap iron anyway so parts availability is my only concern. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Hopefully more and more of these machines will hit the market to support a good dealer network.

Update to all concerned: I managed to recover the pics I took at Memphis. I'll need to resize them, but that's not a big deal.

RAB, Terex's model designation is a bit convluted to be sure. I thought the SB was sideshift as well, but then some Fermec center pivot machines had an S in the model number as well.
I dunno either. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
