Before I finally broke down and bought a PHD, heres what I did: I started digging the hole with my backhoe (only a 12" bucket) for the first 1 1/2 - 2 foot depth and then dug the rest by hand. This allowed me to get thru most of the rock and into the clay. The 12" bucket didnt disturb a lot of ground only going the first 2 foot and digging out the clay by hand was alot easier than digging out the rock by hand.
