Thx for responses guys. My pal has decided that giveen his likely use, an occasional mini-hoe rental makes more sense.
That frequently seems the case. There is something to be said for having the machine whenever you need it, but then if you only use it once or twice a year it's hard to justify. Renting a Bobcat 337 for a week costs me around $800. That's what I choose to do over buying a bigger machine.
