I feel the need for a tiller for my 7610. I've never used anything more than a Toro walk behind so I'd appreciate some advice and council. I have 10 acres with 7 in pasture and 3 in home, yard and barn. All could use a good soil loosening. We have a high clay content that is quite hard. Any advice is welcome.

I have used a five foot Kuhn tiller for over 15 years with excellent results.

I have 4ft PTO tiller made by Tartar Industries. (they make a 6ft, too, but I thought that too big for my BX24)

Here in SE PA, it's VERY stony. If it will till my fields from rough to finished (after tilling, then York raking) without dying I think it will till anything.

Bought mine at Tractor Supply, not sure who else sells them.

tmartel,
Thanks for the info, is your tractor a B7610? All the info I've seen on 24hp tractors indicates a 4' tiller should be used, but I'd love to be able to get a 5' and not worry about overtaxing my tractor.

Aaron,
Is your B7500 a 21hp tractor? Please tell me what you discovered when making your decision to get a 5' tiller for your tractor. Like I said above I'd much rather buy a 5' than a 4' but I want to have all the information and possible consequences before pulling the trigger on a new tiller.

Thanks,
Claude

I run a Landpride 1550 RTR tiller behind my JD2305 (18PTO HP) with no problems through some pretty stiff clay soil. Just need to go real slow that first pass ...

It has 21 at the engine and 17 at the PTO. We have also run it on a Deere 755 (20 engine, 15 PTO). The B7500 runs it fairly well and has enough oomph to pop shearpins on occasion, but you know that ti is back there. They probbaly got it because the local dealer recommended it (inlaws purchased it before I met them).
The 755 didn't have enough oomph to do much with it. Had to go very sloooooow.
The Kubota L3830 on the other hand hardly notices that it is back there, but you can only cover one tire.
Your B7610 should handle it just fine.

I have run a 4' tiller behind my B7510 for 5 years. Both are still running fine. Go for a unit that has a slip clutch and service the slip clutch at least once a year. Adjust the slip clutch so that it does not put excessive strain on the pto drive train.

In hard ground go very slow. I have pulled a plow through the intended area, then made several passes with the tiller to get the desired consistency. I have also started shallow gradually increasing the depth setting on the tiller on the next pass.

With hard soil be careful of getting one too big. I 4ft with plenty of power will get as much done as a 5ft that you have to creep with. Your owners manual has a recommendation in the back.

Thanks for all the advice. I've pretty well decided to buy a 4' tiller. I'm convinced that a 5' wouldn't be a bad choice given what a few guys have said here but I'm going to opt for the one I know would be easiest on my tractor. I checked with the local TSC and they have a 5' Countryline on sale for $1499 starting today. That's the same price as the 4' but they don't have a 4' in stock. One thing that blew me away was that the manager told me he couldn't discount a 4' for me if he had one. He said it was not in his power to do that. I've been able to get department managers at Lowes and Home Depot to discount tools and equipment before. It's hard for me to believe that TSC is shortsighted enough to not allow a store manager a little discretion in making a big ticket sale.

One other strange thing I noticed was that the 5' Countryline had a manufacturer's plate on it that said it was made by Tarter. It looks identical to the King Kutter. I've read in some old threads that King Kutter makes its own tillers. What gives? Does Tarter make KK's tillers or does KK make Tarter's tillers? Anybody know?
