Anybody use it?

I.e., my B7610HSD Operator Manual states:

Rear PTO speed #1: 540rpm pto @ 2600rpm engine
Rear PTO speed #2: 960rpm pto @ 2554rpm engine

I know some folks just want to throttle down with a higher PTO speed to save fuel cost running a rotary cutter for example, but is there any downside basing the operating speed of an implement on something other than 540? Is that non-standardization considered blasphemous? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Too many power outages and lotsa talk the past few years about PTO gennys and projects convinced me to pick up the el-cheapo 10kw gen head. Which, as a PTO genny, would require a 540>3600 = 6.7:1 increaser. Previous discussions say finding this ratio gearbox is like finding a needle in a haystack. After looking for a while, I agree (if you found a source, please share).

So why not just run off the 2nd PTO speed of 960 at recommended engine rpms? 960>3600 makes for an even 3.75:1 increase and it sounds like there may even be a few PHD and RC gearboxes with that ratio floating around. If nothing else, makes for a better selection/price of pulleys and/or sprockets. Comments?

Anybody actually finish a 3-pt HF pto gen? I built a 3-pt frame for the gen head, pillow blocks, pulleys etc., then ran into the attached pic on www.MachineBuildersNet.com. Now I really like that simple frame design for it's smaller, compact storage size, although I think I want to stick with cogged belt pulleys vs. chain sprockets. Thanks.

frankc - the PTO is there to be used at either speed. Designing to a non-standard (non-540rpm) PTO speed just limits the gennys usability to your own tractor. That may or may not be a big deal to you but I prefer the flexibility of being able to swap onto any tractor (with the proper shaft). However, if it costs twice as much to do at 540, well, I guess the neighbors are going to be out of luck 'cause I dont lend my tractor out. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

BTW, I've only found one 1:1.375 hydraulic pump drive increaser that might be made to bolt-on the gen head with a custom adapter plate. Unfortunately, it cost $359.91 + UPS ground $30.00 = Total $389.91. Part No. B9212 from bare-co.com

Pulleys are looking a whole lot cheaper which, of course, was the whole idea originally...
