I am planning on doing a valve adjustment to my mid90's B7100 this spring. I have searched the forums and found good advice on how to actually do the adjustment. But I haven't found anything on how to easily rotate the crankshaft to get the valves in the correct position for adjustment. I know I can bump the starter to get things in the correct position, but was wondering if there is a simple way (without having to take apart much of the tractor) to move the crankshaft manually? To me, this would seem to put less stress on the starter and provide for more exact positioning of the crankshaft and valves.

I did this a few yeas ago. I removed the glow plugs to eliminate compression. I rotated the crank forward directly with a johnson bar and socket at the harmonic balancer. For fine adjustments, or to back up a bit, I removed the starter and rotated the flywheel with a lever against the teeth.

I had to rotate the engine on our G5200H to remove the propshaft. Used a rubber strap wrench on the front pulley sheave. Worked great and I was able to adjust the angle of the crank with fairly good precision. Made getting the bolts securing the Lovejoy coupling apart very painless.

If you move the crank slowly compression will leak by the rings so you don't have to pull the glow plugs.
