Actually Dan I probably would use the gear again if it looked undamaged. Mainly because it is a low speed piece of machinery and the tolerances are not those of a compressor on a Rolls Royce engine.

I draw the line somewhere when it comes to replacing parts. If they look good I stop there. I am not made of money or time.

I guess I could say that if something came between the gears then it most likely damaged a series of parts. I guess it could have damaged the shaft supporting the gear. It could have damaged the housing that holds the shaft that supported the gear. If it did not damage the shaft support housing then I should replace the piece that supports the housing as it may have stretched the threads to create the clearance for the piece that came between the gears in the first place.

Then again, I may just replace the ring gear and call it good if everything else looks good. Maybe in ten years it will be a problem again. I will worry about it then.

Problem is when tooth debris from the ring gear enters the lower shaft bearing at the base of the bevel case, the bearing is destroyed and then a programmed self destruction of your axle case commences. The bearings in my case was worn so bad that the shaft pinion could not mesh properly with the ring gear, thus losing 4WD control....I was lucky my case did not crack.
All in all everything shimed up to spec. when assembled.
