Tractor
JD LX288 and a B7800
So far, many have said the following:

1. The price diff between B2910 and L3010 is too small to not justify buying the L3010 (more tractor)

2. The performance diff between B2710 and B2910 is too small to justify the price difference (understanding fully the different options for both B2x10 units).

Shall I hang myself now? or wait a lil while later?

I do NOT plan on mowing (i have a jd lx288 for that and it works perfectly)

I DO plan on moving snow, skidding some trees, moving some rocks, managing manure, maintaining an 1000 foot drive, and some minor clearing of my mostly clear 6.2 acres.

Perhaps they should invent/produce a BL2800 or a BL3000?

HEEEEEELLP! ;)

Click here for Carvers explanation of the differences between a 2910 and 3010. For your uses I would recommend a 3010. Mostly because you are not going to be cutting lawn with it. Click here for Carvers list of differences between 27 and 2910. If you are trying to decide between 27 and 2910 I would go for the 2910. That's because I have one and I felt the differences were worth the extra money. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Doug, I keep repeating myself on this topic. Lots of folks trade UP in size, very few trade DOWN. Get the biggest thing you have room to maneuver and can afford.

Doug.
Boondox seems to be the man to answer question since he owns 3010 for almost a year, also doing what you are planning to do on your land.
Good luck and don't give up. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Doug -- I have an L3010 (Clementine is her name) and am extremely happy with her. I traded up from a B1750 and nearly bought a 2710, but was able to test one and found that it just didn't have the mass needed to handle the logging and rock harvesting I typically do. Either would have handled the snow removal and groundskeeping, but for the heavy stuff you need mass.

As I recall you're somewhere in NY. If it's close enough to Stowe, Vermont why don't you come over and wrestle some trees with me?

Boon, what type of logging?

I don't have acres and acres and acres of harvestable timber. I have about 2 acres of perimeter foresting that has NEVER been cleaned. Once I pull out the dead stuff, it will be a while before it has to be done again.

I do have some rock walls I'd like to get back into shape. Most importantly, I need the manure piles and driveway tended to.

I'm predicting little or no snow for lower NY state this year (we are in a serious drought), but when the snow does return, it will require at least a 25hp+ machine to bucket it out.

I suspect the 3010 is too much machine. Everyone disagree?

if your not going to mow, and the weight of the tractor is not a consideration as far as tearing up the lawn , go for the 3010.

Doug -- Nothing serious in the logging department. I heat with wood, and with 150 acres the wind generally knocks down enough trees to meet my needs. In the old days I'd take the chainsaw to the tree on my ATV, limb and buck it into stove-length, then carry the pieces home six at a time till the tree was all next to the garage. Now I take the tractor to the tree, cut off the rootball if needed, cut off the crown and limbs, and drag the rest home to deal with at my leisure.

Usually, however, Clementine and I stay in the six acres that are near the house and relatively flat. Well, less steep anyway! And it's in my efforts to rebuild and extend those wonderful 200 year old stone walls that Clementine really excels. The 2710 I tested was unable to handle a full bucket of granite, and much less able than the L3010 at digging boulders out of the ground. I've been able to carry hunks of granite that were so large they had to be lashed into the bucket with Clementine; and even with all that weight up front she was controllable. The 2710 was unable to lift nearly that much, and pushing the envelope resulted in some pretty scary handling.

The 2710/2910 are wonderful tractors, don't get me wrong, but if you intend to handle lots of stone and lumber, the extra mass and hydraulic capacity of the L3010 provides a safety margin I simply can't do without. As for mowing, I finish mow my meadow. Even with all that weight riding on ags, the only turf I damage is in muddy areas.

You'll never regret getting more tractor. If the cost is bearable (not much difference as I recall), go with bigger.

Is there any reason why owning a 3010 is not possible? Is it too heavy to trailer (if you even care), too big to fit in your garage, too long to maneuver, or too expensive? If there is no reason why you CAN NOT get the 3010, then I suggest you do. It's bigger and heavier and both really matter as Boondox has pointed out.

I've got a 2910 because I need to trailer it and that made a 3010 impossible because of the extra weight.
