Help please guys!

This may seem a very strange post /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif. On Saturday my B2150 HST FEL/BH will be arriving /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif, as you will know from my previous posts I have not seen it yet. I also have never driven a tractor - apart from moving one a few yards. I ordered an operators manual from the local Kubota dealer which arrived yesterday but it was for the manual tranny not the hydro so I took it back /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif. The chances are that I won't be able to get the operators manual until next week now.

The tractor is being collected today by a company who normally deliver cars so the dealer will probably have to load it. Now some of you may be ahead of me here, what I need to know is how to start it and drive it as I may have to get it off the trailer or at least start it so that the driver can get it off.

I know that there are controls that have to be in a certain position before it will start but I don't know which controls are which /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif, this is why I wanted to have the operators manual so that I would know all this before it arrived. Are all the controls labelled? What position do they have to be in to start? How do I raise/lower the FEL? How do I position the BH?

I am starting to panic /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif, what if I can't get it started and it has to stay on the trailer /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif, how can I operate it safely /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif.

I realise these are basic questions /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif but I just need some pointers to get me started.

Thanks in advance

Nothing to worry about. You will be able to start it; if you can't, it can be pushed/pulled off of the truck.

In general, to make sure that it starts, just make sure that everything is in neutral or disengaged and that the clutch is depressed. On my B7500, there is a red knob underneath the ignition key; this is the "kill" switch that actually cuts off fuel (or delivers it) and thereby lets you run or stop the engine.

Just make sure this red knob is pushed in; if not, the engine will just crank and crank without turning over (I'm speaking from experience).

The FEL moves by moving the FEL handle around. Just stick your tractor in the middle of your lawn where you can't wreck anything and practice practice practice.

I was in the same position as you. Never owned a tractor before (just a push lawn mower and snowblower). I was in a situation where I had to buy something quick, so could not spend months researching and educating myself.

In the end, it's like most things in life in that reality is much simpler than the aniticpation and worry that precedes it.

Good luck. You'll be happy with it.

Andy,
Congratulations on your soon to be New arrival.
What are the chances of going to your nearest dealer and asking some of these questions, and receiving a few starter lessons to help alleviate some of your concerns.
Even if this is not the dealer you purchased from, it may likely be the dealer you will be working with in the future for various things. I am sure that somebody there would be happy to show you around the workings of a B2510.

Andy,

Slow down....take a breath.....stay calm!/w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif You'll be able to figure this thing out very easily. Just take your time when the tractor arrives. You don't owe the driver of the truck any explanations of what you're doing or not doing. If you feel you must explain something, just say that you're taking your time because you want to make sure everything is working properly before you accept the tractor.

Just climb in the seat and s-l-o-w-l-y start looking at the controls and determine in your own mind what each one does. Once you're comfortable with doing that, make sure the transmission is in neutral and then start it when you're ready. Since your greatest concern seems to be getting it off the trailer, simply raise the FEL and or 3pt implements that are mounted (remember, you figured out how to do this when you were looking over everything), leave the parking brake on, depress the clutch (if needed), and slip it into gear. While at low idle, release the parking brake and if the tractor does not move, give it just a little throttle (hand throttle is probably better than foot at this point). Slowly drive off the trailer until the all implements are clear of the trailer and stop. YOU DID IT!! /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif Now that wasn't so hard, was it?

Like I said earlier, just take your time and don't feel like you have to make any excuses or explanations to anyone. It's your tractor, after all!

Andy, if your backhoe is a subframe mount, watch it as you pull the tractor off the trailer. If the ramp is short, the back of the subframe may bottom out slightly on the trailer as you pull off. You may have to use the hoe to slightly lift and push the the tractor off the back of the trailer. When I say slightly, I mean just enough to get everything to clear. My dealer had to do this to unload my tractor when he brought it to my place. Just take your time and watch and you will be fine.

Andy,
Boy...one could spend hours answering this post.

I'll try to give some B2150HSD-specific tips from memory (I don't have my B2150HSD nor my B2150 operator's manual at my house right now).

Here's a mini "Starting Engine" checklist followed by some basic B2150 descriptions:

(a) Check Fluid levels (oil, radiator fluid in the engine compartment and the hydrostat oil level using the dipstick under the seat)
(b) Check both fuel shutoffs to ensure that there is fuel flow to the engine (refer to (1) below).
(c) Ensure that the PTO lever is in neutral (see item (2) below).
(d) Check the HST range lever to see whether you are in High/Medium/Low range or neutral. If it is in neutral then you’ll need to shift it into one of the ranges before the transmission will move the tractor (see item (6) below).
(e) Depress and hold the clutch pedal
(f) Move the throttle lever all the way UP (slowest engine speed) then back down about an inch.
(g) Turn the key beyond the ON position to the GLOW PLUG position (check for the glow plug indicator on the dash) and hold it there for about 5 seconds; then turn the key further to the right to engage the starter.
(h) You should be able to slowly release the clutch pedal and the tractor should not move.
(i) Release the parking brakes (item 4)
(j) If the HST is in one of the High/Medium/Low positions then all you have to do press the front part of the HST pedal to move forward and press the back half of the HST pedal to move aft. Let the hydrostat transmission do the primary braking for you; think of the brake pedals as secondary brakes.

To shut off the engine:

(a) Reduce throttle to idle
(b) Pull the engine kill knob (item (1))
(c) Turn off the key
(d) Set the Parking Brakes

I will refer to the right hand and left hand side as if you were sitting in the driver's seat.

(1) Fuel Shutoff Valves(s): The B2150 has (1) a fuel shutoff knob on the right side of the dash that can be used to shut off the engine and (2) a fuel shutoff valve located next to the fuel filter on the right hand side. Make sure that the knob is pushed in prior to starting.

(2) PTO Lever & 4wd Lever: These are located by your left leg as you sit in the seat. The PTO lever is basically the ON/OFF switch for both the mid and rear PTO shafts and has three positions: 540 rpm; Neutral; and 780? rpm. Some tractors require that the PTO be in neutral before the tractor will start; my older B2150 does not care. I don't know a lot about backhoes but I do know that some operate off of the tractor's hydraulic system and some have a hydraulic pump that attaches to the rear PTO shaft. If you have the latter type of backhoe then you'll need to learn about the PTO lever; otherwise, just keep it in neutral because you'll never need it with the backhoe attached.

(3) Differential Lock Pedal: This pedal is located such that you would use your the heel of your left foot to engage the differential lock so that both rear wheels have traction instead of one. Don't worry about trying to use this pedal for a while.

(4) Parking Brake: There is a skinny lever/rod that sticks up from between the brake pedals and the center hump. The parking brake is actuated by pressing and holding the brakes, then holding the rod in the UP position while releasing the brakes. The rod should stay in the UP position. To release the parking brakes, simply press the brake pedals and the rod should fall.

(5) Differential Braking: You have the option of using the left brake, right brake, or both. Keep the brake pedals locked together for a while; differential braking can get you into trouble if you don't know what you are doing and besides, you will rarely need to use that feature for FEL/BH operations.

(6) HST 3-range lever: This lever is located by your right leg and moves along a pathway that resembles an upside down "U". If the engine is running you'll need to depress the clutch and make sure that tractor isn't moving prior to changing the lever's position. In the full up position is the MIDDLE range (where I keep mine most of the time). In the full down position closest to the center hump is the LOW range position. In the full down position away from the center hump is the HIGH range position. Halfway down either side is the NEUTRAL position.

(7) 3-Point Lift: On the right side of your seat is the 3-point lift arm. I have never seen a backhoe mounted on a B2150; I'm assuming that the lift arms are removed

(8) Cruise Control Levers: You’ll probably never use these, don’t worry about them. There is the big long lever that comes up on the left side of the instrument panel and a short lever on the lower right side of the center hump.

Well, enough of that for now. Hope that helps,
Kelvin

andy, not real familar with 2150, but am sure u can figure it out. just be sure that all levers are in netural position. then start tractor, u will probaly need to depress clutch(should anyhow) TO BE SAFE. one it starts, check out the fel control , this one should be easy, then the bh control, just raise them both slightly. if it is being delivered form a car carrier, as u say, if it can unload low slung cars without a problem u will have no problem with tractor, ONCE U GET THE IMPLEMENTS HIGH ENOUGH TO NOT BOTTOM OUT. JUST RAISE THEM HIGH ENOUGH AS U NEED TO, no more!!! then slowly pull or back off with foot on clutch and other foot near brake. i really don't think u will have any problem. u can cal the dealer that u were going to buy the manule from and ask him these questions, before it is delivered. once u get it off drive it to an open area of your yard and just play with the controls. will be awaiting your results. sorry about the long post. but now u got me nervous/w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

Andy,
Too bad you returned the operators manual. Even though it was for a gear shift model, many of the other controls were probably the same. I just got a B7500 hydro, which I believe is very similar to the B2150. If you give me your e-mail address, I can send you some diagrams from the manual which will give you a better idea of what controls are located where. (By the way, nice description Kelvin.)
Good luck.
Dave

Wow Kelvin /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif that is some reply! Thanks to you and to everyone for the replies, you have made me feel much better about what to do.

I am going to print out the thread and have it with me ready for when it arrives /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. I am getting really excited and can't wait to see it. I have cleared some space in the garage but until it is here I won't know if it will fit in. When we built I had the door opening made large so with some luck it will.

Thank you all once again for your help and advise, I really appreciate it /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

Regards
