I've seen similar threads before but not quite the same. [By the way I have 3 B2150's bought over the years and love the critters. This one in question happens to be in the best condition of the 3. About 1988 model, has only ~ 600 hrs on it. Great shape. ]

So here is the tale: Another family member had run down the battery after snow removal 270 miles from me at my vacation place. Left lights on. When I went there a month later it charged easily and started quite readily after maybe an hour of charging at 15 or 30 amp level. All indoors. However before charging I had tried the starter just momentarily with the charger on. Not using the "engine start" high current charger mode. The dash lights were bright but some relay or ? chattered loudly when I turned the key to engage the starter. Did NOT sound to me like the ordinary starter solenoid at all, a more "tinny" light duty kind of sound to it. I was not really trying to start it, just checking to see what adding 30 amps might do.

All went well after charging and starting (and running an hour or more) EXCEPT that now it will not shut off by key. The emergency shutoff pull-knob will shut it off but the switch will not. Also in the past when shutting down I would always hear some delayed relay click , kind of a light thunk, around 10 or 15 seconds after the engine was shut own. All 3 of my B2150s act that way. Do not know what that is (fuel solenoid?), but now when stopping the engine by the pull knob there is no “later relay noise.”

I assume some relay or solenoid has been blown? Does it matter to have to shut it off with the pull knob for a good long procrastination period until I get around to debugging the issue? Is that risking some sort of damage?

It sounds like you have a good idea what the problem is. I would be checking the fuse or relay that controls the fuel shutoff solenoid.
There is no penalty in manually shutting the engine down.
