Hello All
I came across a B1700 for cheap that apparently has a clutch that is inoperative and won't drive. It is an HST 4wd model. 900 hours

What might be wrong and how hard/much is it to fix?
if I can get the price cheap enough I was thinking of picking it up to tinker with and use or sell

I helped the neighbor with his B1700

The center fell out of the clutch plate.

Spliting the tractor is required to replace the clutch plate. Lot's of little bits to disconnect between front and back, but nothing major.

We made use of the shop rafters and a come along to hold up the engine, and a floor jack to wheel out the back end. 'could have gone either way.

Give yourself a day to take it apart, and a day to put it back. that and a couple of hundred in parts. (disc/pressureplate/ throwout bearing, beer.... etc.......)

Reaching in the belly to dick around with the front drive shaft was the only part I didn't appreciate. Looking up at oily wet drips never does anything for me ;-)

When I split my JD750, I used floor jack for the front half and garage beam equipped with a chain hoist for the back portion. All small tractors are basically the same and they are not that difficult to take apart if your reasonably mechanically inclined and have some patience. My clutch had issues as I forgot to keep the pedal depressed a few times during long term storage and it rusted to the pressure plate. I did the repairs over the weekend without help after procuring the clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing and pilot bearing. While it was apart I made certain the splines were real clean and the throw-out bearing moved real smoothly before reassembling.

Additionally... I was able to use the input shaft to locate the clutch disk when assembling the pressure plate. If your input shaft doesn't come out, you might need a special tool to do so. Perhaps someone who has done this on your model can confirm before cracking apart to minimize any delays.

Did it have a loader? If so, it was a pretty good price, if not he made out fairly well.
Around here, they run $5-6k with just a mower and $6-9k with a loader and a mower.

No just mid mount mower in decent condition.
I think he made out well, but I would be looking for a better deal on one that has known issues.
