Axes?

I'm a sling blade kinda guy, too. Mmmm-hmmm. That's about all I use anymore if it does not involve splitting wood. Mmmm-hmmm. I gotta stop now, the little voice in my head is telling me to go home and sharpen my knives...

never used a sling blade - how does it compare to a machete? Sorta looks like a machete on a stick.

I don't know what a sling blade is. All I can find is a movie with billie bob when I search. Anybody got a picture?

There are sling blades, swing blades, brush axes and bush axes. I don't really know which is which but there is the axe like tool that someone showed above but there is also this:

This is what we always used to call a sling blade.

I never used one like the one on the left, as a youngster I got more experience with the one on the right than I wanted. And in those days they were called a yo-yo in my part of the country (south central Oklahoma).

oh heck. I give up, I've never even seen those things! I thought it was a machete on a stick.

Be VERY thankful you have never had to USE on of those things! :D:D:D

I have extensive experience with the one on the right. Never seen the one on the left. I wonder if it works better but not having long grass/brush getting wrapped around the head of the tool.....

I don't wonder enough to buy one to try though. :D:D:D

This is what I call a swing blade, bush axe, (or bush hook)...there are different kinds, some are sharp on both sides and fairly heavy, but some only have one side that is sharp and are lighter in weight. I like and use the heavier double edged one. I have several, a one edger and a couple heavy double edgers. If you get one, get the heavier double edger. The neat things about these axes are the long handle, (longer than a regular axe), and the long sharp edged blade. You can cut your way into briar beds and not get scratched up as much like with a machete...which is shorter and your hand and body are closer to the blade and where you are swinging. The bush axe blade can be swung and used like an axe to cut small trees. I use the "J" portion of the blade to snag what you have cut and fling it out of the way without having to grab it with your hands to remove it. It's a really a good all round tool to keep in the back of your truck when out in the woods. When bungee corded on the back of the atv, I keep it in a sheath I made. I keep it really sharp and the end sticks out beyond the 4 wheeler sides and an accident waiting to happen otherwise.
