I'm rehabbing a 1950's International TD-9.

First time I tried to pull the lever to lift the front blade, there was a buzzing/chattering from the hydraulic system. I'm not sure if this is normal but it sure doesn't sound normal.

Before trying this, I had checked the hydraulic tank and found it low. Some AW32 hydraulic fluid was nearby, so I used that to top off the tank. Several gallons.

Is there a viscosity difference between AW32 and AW46? I know some of my other equipment calls for AW46. I don't have any books or manuals for the TD-9 so I can't look there for an answer.

It was suggested to check the hydraulic filter screen. I tried, but upon unscrewing it I found it binds against the frame. I'd have to open some other plumbing in the hydraulic system to get it free, and I don't want to do that yet. I did notice that clear, brand new looking fluid came out when I tried to open it up.

Any ideas?

AW32 is 10w, AW46 is 15w.
The sound you described is likely a relief valve opening - a lot of older machines set relief pressure with shim washers, if your TD9 has sat a long time the relief spring is probably relaxed enough so that lifting the blade causes it to open.

I've never worked on an International ANYTHING, so can't help you beyond those general thoughts... Steve

Plugged screen/filter? Suction restriction of some sort? Old dog like that, I would be using AW46 or thicker, certainly not AW32.
