Vin,

Have a GREAT Australia Day! It sounds pretty neat.

Bet you have some pretty good eats to go along with your Foster's, huh? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Enjoy Vin and have one for me. On second thoughts, I'll have one for myself ... all in the name of improving international relations.

One big typo and could not change. Australia Day is today, the 26th Jan not the 25th. Thanks for all your good wishes.

The celebrating nature of Australia Day has changed over the past 25 years. When I was a child, in typical apathetic Australian nature it was simply a public holiday and a reason not to go to work. Today it is becoming more and more a day of patriotism with most communities having some sort of public celebration. In my home town tonight there will be fireworks, music, food festival and side shows.

Have a good Australia day then my friend. As for the change in nature of the holiday, it's natural. In the old day, there is not much of a threat on your nation so there isn't much display of patriotism. Nowaday the world has gotten a lot "smaller" due to global travel and internet connection. With that comes terrorism and the nations react by displaying their strength and patriotism. Personally I think the display of patriotism is good. It makes the people of a nation feel closer together. Over here I tend to talk to my neighbor more on July 4th simply because we are all out there barbequeing and later watching over the kids and "their" play with fireworks.
