I just used my auger for the first time yesterday. I've had it laying around now for a couple years. Everybody tells me that they won't work in our area because the ground is so hard. I was surprised how well it poked a quick 9" hole 3 feet deep! But, I was having a hard time getting it to drill a plumb hole. Am I setting something up wrong or is it just the nature of the beast?

Actually thats normal, but can be corrected. I'll bet that all of your holes pointed towards the tractor didn't they. This is because of geometry, the top of the digger will get further away from the tractor as it lowers, the bottom cant swing any more because it is in the ground. This causes your holes to pint towards the tractor, or lean away from the tractor at the top of the hole, whichever way you want to look at it. To correct this you need to move the tractor forward as the hole gets deeper, how much is something you'll learn.

Good luck,
DuaneW.
