I had a wire rub issue under my right joy stick that caused the ignition fuse to blow. I repaired the worn wires but during the trouble shooting process before I found the bare wires, I pulled out the Alt Diode in the fuse panel and am not sure I put it back in the correct way. Does anyone know how to tell if the diode is plugged into the panel the correct way or if it is flipped? My battery is not charging and the tachometer is no longer working, does the diode in the fuse panel effect either of these? any help would be appreciated since the alternator is $900 to replace and I hope it is just the diode.

A wiring diagram for your tractor will show you how the diode should be installed. If you are not familiar with the banding identification on diodes, you can google it. Wikipedia will probably show you how diodes are identified. However, it seems like the clip that it is installed to would have the standard diode symbology embossed or printed on it to show you which way it should go in, so look at it very closely.

There could still be a problem with your alternator, but get the diode installed correctly first.

Kebo,
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.
I will run through the things you suggested about the diode identification.

I typed my first response in a hurry this morning before I left for work, so I didn't have much time. Usually on diodes, there is a band on one end, that is almost always the cathode end. If you want to learn some about diodes, here is the Wikipedia link:

Diode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

One question I have though, is how is this device marked?? Does it have a band on end? Or is one end narrower than the other end? There are different ways that they are marked.

Here are some other diodes. They come in a wide variety of packages as you can see.

DIODE MARKINGS

Now that you have some idea of which end is which on the diode, you just need to know how it is situated in the fuse panel; that's where you will need a wiring diagram. Hopefully your fuse panel has some markings that will indicate the diode orientation. Good luck!

Kebo,
Thanks for the follow-up information on Diodes. I found the wiring diagram of the fuse panel and saw the orientation of the current flow through the diode. the alternator checked out OK and it turned out in my earlier troubleshooting efforts, I had flipped the diode. Once I put it in correctly, the charging issue was resolved.
Thanks again for all your help.

i used this to help me diagnose the vehicle i am working on myself...SR80 thats been rolled over 3 times and blown up more than that while working in a mine field...

after all said and done the alt. needs a load to work, needed the diode(correct position), the white wire was tach AC power, the gray wire is field activation and needed unblown fuse in cab in fuse panel (alt fuse)...

later and love the site!!!

Hi Guys,

I'm hoping you can help me. Agreed, this is a great site. I have an ASV SR70 and the tach is not working. For a while it would work sporadically, but now nothing at all. The nothing at all has happened since removing the alternator because I thought I had a bad alternator. Everything checked out and the electrical system has been working fine ever since reinstalling. Not sure if I had a loose belt or maybe a loose wire connection. Now I appear to be down to the tach not working.

I don't have access to a wiring schematic for the machine (if you know where I can find one it would be much appreciated) so not sure where the sensor is getting the information. From your post above it sounds like the white wire going to the alternator? Do you have any experience tracking down how to resolve this issue.

If it is getting its information from the alternator do you think I have a problem there and if not maybe a grounding problem somewhere. I'm not a mechanic, but can run a volt meter and fairly good at problem solving. How do I go about determining where my problem is.

Thx in advance.

4 wires coming from the tach...1st runs from a Bus Power source in the fuse panel, 2nd is a power wire from the Lights Relay in the fuse panel, 3rd is ground that jumps from the gauges next to the tach in the arm, 4th wire runs to the alternator pin 3 of the P31 connector at the alternator...

hope this helps!!!

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. I'll take that apart next and see if I can determine what the problem is. Sounds like odds are that the problem is in the ground wire. That should be easy to track down!!! Any tips on diagnosing will be much appreciated..

I appreciate the help and found the source of the problem. Turns out the connection was bad going into the alternator which was causing the tach not to work in addition to the alternator gauge showing disturbing numbers.
