I am hoping to install over 500' this weekend. In the past I have used schedule 40 but my plumber talked me into SDR 17 this time. Can anyone provide tips and explain the process of assembling this pipe. Thanks.

I have been plumbing a long time and this is the first I have heard of SDR 17. I have installed SDR 27. Is it a gasket in hub type pipe? If so, you use a lube made for that type fitting and just push them together. Making sure they bottom out. On 2" a shovel works pretty good just turned around and use it like a lever. If you make any turns be sure and block the 90 so they don't push off. Keep us up on your progress.

It is a gasketed pipe. My local supplier had SDR 21 and SDR 17. The SDR 17 is a heavier 250 PSI rated pipe.

My plumber said to use soap as the lubricant when joining the sections. I am not certain whether he really meant soap or was referring to special lube as soap.

OK , you can use soap, but the supplier of the pipe should have a lube made for that. There will be alot of soap in your pipe by the time you lay that much. Be sure and rinse it good before using the water.

We installed 500' today. It was as simple as cleaning the ends, coating the beveled end with lubricant and then two men pushing them together. Occasionally a joint did not want to seat. We placed a cap on the line and tapped with a hammer on 3 or so stubborn joints. My Dad and I assembled the 500' in a little over 2 hours. The next 150' will be through rock. I am leaving that until next week. Ill take some pictures and post them in the coming days.

Absolutley put in thrust blocks for ANY turn! That joint WILL come loose if not restrained.

Fortunately this was a straight run. We wiggled around a little but did not have any corners.

The valve on the hydrant is a good idea. Be sure and make it where you can get to it without digging. Also a post of some kind to tie the hydrant to is a good idea. If you break the fitting behind the valve you are dry at the house until it is fixed. I usually put the hydrant farther from the main and use a piece of soft copper so it can move without breaking anything. Just a few points I have learned over the years. Some smaller gravel will help keep the mud from clogging your drain down hole.
