I found a place that will deliver asphalt millings for $200 a tri-axle load. Is it a good idea to run the asphalt millings the whole depth of the driveway or should I have something else in the base? I have close to 15" of topsoil to remove for my driveway, can I get away with just packing the top with a Bromag roller or do I need to pack it several times? THANK YOU! Driveway will be about 450'x10'
PS
I did read the other thread about asphalt millings on here. Got some great info but I still had questions.

I have the asphalt crushing on my driveway. Its been added over a thick (6-8") layer of 21AA limestone. The 21AA had packed down over 20 years with almost continuous additions of new material. It became very hard, almost like concrete. This forms a permanent base for the asphalt, which is a softer amalgam. I believe you are going to need a more stable underlayment. Otherwise its going to quickly mingle with the dirt, rocks, and grass and disappear.

The asphalt is terrific roadbed, though, Quiet, dustfree, stays put, and easier to walk barefoot on. Even the dogs don't mind walking on it now. Over the course of 2 years, some of the tar has washed or evaporated out so the material has lost some of its "blackness".

I am a big an of asphalt millings and here in the south we would only need a 4 inch base of what we call crusher run (gravel ) and then apply the millings and roll it real good . It would be nice if you could get 4 inches of millings on top of the gravel.

The Top Soil [organics] should be removed and then the base compacted. Method of compaction sorta depends on the type of soil/ materials. Clays require a foot type compactor, granular use vibratory.

The milling's full depth would be wonderful. Usually folks put other granular material as a first lift for economic reasons.:D

When we built a home in the woods for one of my brothers in the late '90s, we put in a pretty large circle drive in front of the house. I don't remember just how much of the recycled asphalt he had delivered, but he spread it with my B7100 Kubota and the only packing that was done was his Matco tool truck and a UPS truck that drove on it every day.:) It made a great driveway.
