I had a guy come to the house the other day with a picture of my house and land taken from a helicopter. It was a really cool picture, but he was selling it with a frame for $179. Of course I told him no thanks and he left without trying to negotiate. I would have thought he would have came down some to make something off of it since all the work was all ready done. I would have paid $50 for the picture (didn't like the frame), but he didn't even ask what I would be willing to pay or anything. Didn't make sense to me. Is this a normal practice with these guys? The only reason I could figure that he didn't stay around to negotiate was that I had the AR-15 on the table where I had just finished cleaning it, but I'm not even sure if he saw it.

Would you try to negotiate if you were him?

We had two come by within about 2 months offering pictures from a plane for about $120 including the frame. We bought the first since we didn't have one, paid what he asked. For the second one we said we couldn't since we just bought one and he came down to $90, so we bought that one too since it was a much better picture. I'm sure he would consider a lower price.

A fellow did this recently with the farms along the road where my cabin is. My B-I-L was thrilled and bought one. I have no idea how much he paid. But as an amatuer photographer I have to say, the quality was poor. That hardly matters since he was happy with it.

There are companies who will do this upon request with much better equipment than these random 'fly by' folks. They use gyroscopically stabilized camera mounts that deliver extreme quality and high resolution. The images can be blown up beyond poster size, since they are high res and you purchase full rights to the image. But it is not cheap. Around $1000. But let me tell you, these images are stunning!

Big construction companies often have to provide pix of projects in their invoices or as part of their specifications. You might want to look in the yellow pages or TheBlueBook.com under "construction photographs" to find someone who can do this. I have seen some and the quality is excellent, and I have paid less than the $1000 mentioned. You might want to consider the online sattelite photos as well, they're free or have inexpensive prints to buy. Google Earth is an obvious choice.

I have pictures taken from an airplane of my property that size wise match the tax maps available from the county. I have one taken in 1950 and another taken in 1990. It really shows the difference in how the woods have grown up. They were available from the conservation dept.

I also got an overlay that is on a tracing type of paper that has been marked off in acres that makes it easy to lay over the picture and tell the size of each field and section of woods.

People do this all the time and then go around trying to make a buck. A guy I know "I won't call him a friend or anything close, I just know him:rolleyes: ) did this but he went around with the 4x6 photos from Wal-Mart taking orders for larger prints. That way he only had the plane ride and photo developing cost. I don't know what he was charging and didn't even care. If I wanted a picture of our house I would go up in the plane and take it myself as our local airport has plenty of plane rides available. If I was going to do it I would take pictures of my friends places also and make nice pictures for all of them as gifts for no real reason.

We went up on a 5 minute plane ride during a fund raiser for the rotary club held at the airport. I was able to take a picture of my hay fields and a friends house in just 5 minutes. My friend was happy as I gave him pictures of his house from the front and back. I was happy as I had a nice picture of my hay ground.

Chautauqua county has a website that you can look up all the individual parcels of property in the county and find out who owns it. You can click on the photo button and it will overlay the areial photos with the property lines. You can print off the website also but not the full page, borderless photos you would want. It is a great website if you are trying to find out who owns land or what property has sold for and when as it list a lot of information. Does Catt. county have something like this?
