My wife's uncle use to make hooch down in Elizabeth City. Many a farm boy was sent to NC State on "sippin change". Anyway, uncle Johnny was a real artist at his craft. He used a pot still on the stove top and did it all by feel and made some top notch stuff. Kinda funny you can make 5 gals of beer but condense that down to 2 quarts and it's illegal.

As far as the helocopters and so forth, here in Michigan, they look for pot farms every year, they usually bust a couple of people a year in my county alone. The Drug enforcement business is a very big business.

Aw come on now guys. Can anyone name me one person in the past 20 years that has gone to prison for making this stuff for their own consumption? If you are selling it, yes, you will probably get in trouble. If you are making it for yourself, the local cops will probably drink it with you. There are no black helicopters flying tree top level over the woods at night spying on your home.

Move out to Calif, one of them crashed from hitting a power line and started a huge fire back in 02, millions in damage. They are out there, just not everywhere. As far as going to jail, that I do not know about.

Here is a link to a recent arrest for a small still in a man's home. Of course he is a long way from prison. It sounds like the officers were as surprised as he probably was.

I agree completely that this is all about revenue and I would like to see it changed if only to clean the moonshine up. If you could see what has been found dead and floating in moonshine stills in the woods, you would never drink a drop of it. Legalizing it for home consumption, like beer and wine, would save a lot of lives from poisoning by lead and other contaminants and the loss of revenue would be insignificant.

The black helicopters are very real... I used to know several of the guys that flew them, and I pumped a lot of JetA into them as well...

It seems, IIRC, that during the Carter years there was an exception for individuals to make a certain (small) amt of PGA aka moonshine at home. I think it had to do w/ alternative energy sources. Am I recalling that correctly?? Wonder why that changed?

BTW the dead stuff in the pot jsut adds character & flavor. Its the stuff you cant taste thatll get you.

What I remember was the Carter signed the law that allowed home brewing and I think wine making in small quantities. I don't remember distilation being legal for home owners. Be interesting to if it was.

What is funny is that increasing alcohol content via freezing which lowers the water content is illegal. This was supposed to have been a common method for making Apple Jack stronger. And I ain't talking about the breakfast food.

I'm going to say it even though what I did was likely illegal.....

I put a semi warm beer in the fridge...

The water froze.

I was able to clear the ice and pour the beer in a glass. The ice went down the drain. I drank the beer. I'm sure the alcohol content went up some tenth of a percent. Please dont do this. And dont tell the ATF. PLEASE!

Not sure why Im thinking it included more than beer/wine...I thought there was some mention of beets in there which I think would only be useful in making other than wine/beer. Also cant recall the reason(s) behind this other than the 'energy crisis' of the time. Dont think ethanol was even in the alternatives mix back then was it?

LOL...once bought a couple gals of unfiltered cider and left them for a time underneath the house. The containers were the thin plastic milk carton type but they seemed to hold up to the pressure just fine! Yum is all I can say. It was the BEST sparkling cider Ive ever tasted...once it was filtered a bit. Even unfiltered it was pretty tasty.

ETA: I think freezing isnt itself cause for arrest. The content/analysis hasnt changed. Youd have to remove the frozen water to get in trouble. In your case the only 'evidence' is your recollection of the events. I doubt they care at all...then again you just never know.

Just looked it up on the net and Im wrong...seems JC only allowed us to make beer/wine, not spirits. LOL...that was a long time ago.
