I've wondered about the zipper too!

I'm still trying to figure out how they can spay or neuter a dog for a few hundred bucks, but getting something out of their digestive tract is $8000.

I don't know why it even costs a few hundred. Locally there's an organization that runs The Neuter Scooter. (sorry, no dogs, just cats).
They'll spay or neuter your cat for $50.

Years ago in 7th grade. A local vet neutered a teachers cat in the classroom I'm front of us

Sorry for your loss. To the original question ... yeah, they are fewer and further between. I had a great vet, he did everything on any type of animal from surgery down to basic wellness checks & vaccinations. Reasonably priced & obvious that he really cared about the animals. He had been a cancer specialist, but admitted the results were too depressing, so he opened a general vet practice so he could enjoy some victories. Health problems forced him to sell the practice & retire. Three new vets since then. First one misdiagnosed an osteo-sarcoma on my female shepherd, then wouldn't give my wife antibiotics for an infection the dog had when I was out of town without an office visit (wife couldn't lift the dog into the car). I had to put the dog down when I got back because she had opened up the infection to the bone. Next vet ... was good for about three years until covid hit. Management changes then tripled their prices, changed appointment availability to "three weeks out" & brought in a bunch of "temp" vets that didn't know anything. I took a 15 year old Basset in expecting he would need to be put down as he was having breathing issues & wouldn't walk or eat. The "vet" told me he had a minor lung infection & was dehydrated but was fine otherwise. They injected antibiotics & steroids gave him a saline drip to rehydrate, sent me home with more antibiotics & he died that night. Third vet was the buyer of my original California vet's practice. He diagnosed a skin fungal infection (which I had already been treating her for) on my newest Shepherd & treated her with meds that worked, but seemed surprised when I asked about liver & kidney toxicity of the oral anti-fungals. Will be looking for a new vet when I get back to Florida.
