Are kids getting dumber?

The trouble makers of today really have no fear or just don't care what may lay's ahead for them.

1953?..back then the golden was indeed strong compare today, and if you wanted respect than you show respect, also if you didn't want it done to you than don't do it to another.

Times they are a changing for the youth in this fast turning world, and how does one, others, towns, cities etc..cope w/it..not sure..maybe some frontier law and order..goodness sakes we have enough laws on the books, lets use them instead of writing anymore laws.

Being cautious in todays world..indeed,for you are the other guy.

Along a similar vein. My town wants to build a skateboard and/or bicycle park. The parents of these kids claim there is nothing for these kids to do and if the town doesn't provide this resource the kids will turn to vandalism.

Two things bug me about this. One - why must the community provide the entertainment/recreation at great expense to the communinty but for a very limited target population ie skaters? When I had my child I figured my wife and I were responsible for her upbringing - including recreation.

Second - the implied threat of vandalism. I believe if I threatened the town with acts of vandalism I would go to jail. It is tantamount to blackmail. Build the park or suffer vandalism. Let's try this - don't build the park and tell your child if he does vandalism you'll tan his hide.

Okay - I'm done venting on that issue.

Are kids getting dumber? Not on your life! Parents, and educators hands are legally tied in disciplining children or students. A parent cannot 'spank' a child, and it has been held in court that raising your voice to a child is also child abuse! Kids use that fact to 'bully' many parents. Schools are prevented from using corrective measures also...not that I would want them to ursup my responsibility...but then the legal system has already done that.
Yes, there are 'other' ways, but they are not always effective. Yes, children SHOULD be protected, by all of us, but not to the extent of todays 'laws', which abridge parental control.
While my views may not be favorably viewed...they are mine, and I have no problem with someone not liking them.

When we were going up as kids extra money wasn't an issue..for there wasn't any extra money, but plenty of work.
Maybe if some of these trouble makers did some public work.. skating rinks, baseball fields etc.. also pay for there crimes w/hard earn dollars..idle time is a waste of a good mine.

If you had a chance to watch channel 9 news tonight, but yet another major drug bust w/in a week..easy money for some young kids today..darn sad.

Spare the rod and spoil the children. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif
Spank a child in this area and someone see's it or hears about it,you will be facing a judge and you get more than a spanking.

It occurs to me that when I was growing up, if I was in the street doing something wrong and a strange adult had to correct me, it was horrible. Now, if I see kids in the street that need correcting, I have to think long and hard about saying anything, because it could result in something horrible.

I have never spanked my kids but I have no problem with spanking when needed. As long as it is used as punishment and not because the parent or gaurdian is frustrated. If I thought it was necessary I would do it in a second and if some social worker has a problem with it they can go ahead and take me away in cuffs. I've always found that the "experts" on how you should raise children usually have the most violent and out of control kids. When I grew up the thing I dredded the most was being sat in a chair across from my parent and being "talked" to, sometimes softly sometimes like a drill sergent. So this is what I do. I also ask a LOT of questions.

When I was a kid at home, the last thing you wanted to say to my parents was that you was bored. Boy they had more things for you to do and none of them was what I liked. I learned early to make my own entertainment. Vandalism wasn't even to be considered.
