What is special about the 961 or 971 that everyone wants one??

I collect high crop tractors--ones with bull gear rear axles-Ford 961,971, Minneapolis Moline BF, Farmall Cub, Farmall Super A, Oliver 60, Allis Chalmers A, B,C and others like these. That's what's special to me. Don't know about other folks.

Fundamental to the younger generation collecting cars/tractors has to do with an attraction to brands or styles. In today's world the are so many manufacturers that cars and tractors have become somewhat of a commodity. I recall asking a nephew who travels often and rents cars in different cities what cars he has rented and he said "they are usually grey, sometimes red or white". I asked what brand and he had no idea. Cars are like socks to some people, don't have any idea of the brand.

Here is one from Stihl I never knew existed. The green one has custom fenders.

My son is starting off right so far. Usually when I get home I turn the news on and catch a 1/2hr nap while dinner is finished. Not tonight, my 3 year old was ready to get out and work on his tractor. He helped me pour a cocktail down cylinder two. We then laid in the grass underneath looking up into the oil pan-less engine. I explained some things and he pointed some things out to me that he could identify from his "tractor Mac tune up" book. He told me to wait a minute and he came back with his tools. Measured the belt pulley with his tape measure and said "it's forty pounds daddy" i couldn't be prouder. I asked the wife later when we ate our cold missed dinner if she prompted him to get his tools. She said nope he flew through the house, rounded them up, and was back outside. I could give these two hunks of junk away now because I have got my money's worth and then some from this evening. Think I will keep one maybe both from the memories this adventure is producing.

^^^ Great Picture and you're a great dad to spend time with your son like this.

When I was about 9... my dad gave me an old MG sedan someone wanted to get rid of...

My brothers and I played in, around and under that car... it had not run in years and we got it started... sounded good and would practice using a clutch... even though it sounded good... the block turned out to be cracked from a hard freeze.

It was one of the best presents we ever got...

What shows do you recommend in your area that would be worth taking a trip to go see?

I used to have a couple "two cylinders":

I've since gone to strictly lawn & garden tractors & attachments due to space & hauling limitations:

There seem to be collections around here (agricultural area), but the shows aren't getting any bigger, except for the lawn & garden sections! ~~ Lowell

I really wish when New Holland came out with the retro 8n's that they didn't get so fancy with the technology and transmission. It's a perfect example of a situation where everyone wanted one of those tractors but they literally priced themselves out of the market.

Darn, I didn't get the memo.
