I see where you are coming from. Yes if you shipped it as a dedicated load on a lowboy excactly when YOU wanted it moved it would be very expensive. I was able to get mine shipped as a partial load within 2-3 days of contacting the freight broker. Obviously experiences will vary. But there are allot of partial load trucks going up and down and across the states hoping to "fill up". I was able to get mine shipped for .81 cents a mile which I thought was OK. Still makes me sick thinking I paid 1950 in shipping charges though. Hutch

When, I bought a tractor back on the east coast, It took almost a month before it was picked up on one of those partial load, going that way deals. Yes it is about 40% the cost, but it doesn't work if you need something someplace at a certain time.

Right now my plan is to retire in April 2007 and build the garage & driveway over the summer. Waiting a few weeks or a month for the right driver/load is not going to be an issue.

Although, I will check on rent it locally prices. I could probably compress all of the tractor work into 4 or 5 days, and 1 of them might be an excavator.

I had a Ford 3000 moved last winter 500mi. round trip cost $800.00 cash.If you can find an independent owner/operator that you trust I'll bet you can get a deal too.

Be very carefull on who you hire, they must have their DOT rights....
If they get caught DOT will impound everything and guess what it is not the driver (so called company) problem it is yours to go and get the machine.
Ask for their rights, insurance, and all necessary paperwork.

This is a message to everyone.

Is renting a trailer an option maybe?

I hadn't thought of that, but I can look into it. The big problem is that my pickup is too small to tow the weight of the backhoe plus trailer.

Having to rent a truck and a trailer sounds pricey, but it might work out.

Ship American sounds like a reasonable idea also.

I was going to say.. TBN road trip :D My truck could handle the 10'000lb load. Might be slow going through the Siskiyou's though

Have you looked at Yesterdays Tractors? They have a forum on thier web page dedicated to hauling, haulers, and haulee's(is that a word :D) Antique Tractors - Yesterday's Tractors : Antique Tractor Headquarters

Try U-HAUL ,RYDER etc and see what a flat bed truck would cost, enclosed units don't have tiedowns strong enough for equipment, then all you would have to do is locate loading ramps at both ends of your trip. Be sure to check ahead for availibilty.

As long as you have dock access to load and unload, you can get it moved for $800 one way pretty easy as an LTL on a flatbed.. I have TONS of freight contacts since that is a large part of my job. If you need help finding someone, PM me and I'll point you in a few directions.

I do not have dock access at either end. Although I may be able to get it trailered to the dealer in OR for $100 or so, and I am pretty certain he has a dock I could use.

I will look into a local dock in CA.

Thanks for the offer, as I said, I am in the thinking & planing stages right now.

Hey Dave, just a thought if it works out for you. A rollback truck makes a great portable loading dock. I would think if you have AAA or if you just call for one the out of pocket cost shouldnt be much.
