My LA120 manual says I can use API SG. Must be an old rating since I can't find anywhere. Can I use Walmart Supertech SM? I was once told any grade would work for all previous grades, however, that was for a car engine.

First of all, Welcome to the net.

Since your manual was printed the SG rating has gone up. The current oils I have in my shop have either SJ,SL, or SM API rating. The way I hear it, You can use any oil with a SG or higher letter since it will have at least the same additives or better.

SG is an old rating. New ratings supercede the old ones and are backward compatible. The 'S' would be an indication that the engine only requires the use of an automobile lubricating oil and diesel grade. You could use diesel grade as it typically has a more robust inhibitor package. If you choose to go that route, use API CI-4 rating.

Todays oil's oil are better then ever API classifications change for a reason. Tho my self would use other's over ST it'll work for you and get you down the road.
