I agree with the earlier post that you can do it yourself with little problems. I bought a manual back in the 80's that explained in great detail how to rebuild the transmission and tiller drive portion of the Horse tiller. If I remember correctly, excessive play can be caused by bearing wear that is taken up by shims under the cap at the very back of the tiller tube, where the depth adjuster is located. Keep looking for manuals, that is your answer.

Good idea.
I have seen these step-by-step booklets to rebuild the transmission and I think they might have come with the tiller when new.
There are a lot of used parts on EBAY but, as noted above, they use a lot of shims in differnt places to take up slack.
On EBAY a few months ago I think I saw a whole trans for maybe $275.
