With the high cost of our "toys", does anyone here send oil samples out to be tested?
I have done it once, and I know it should be repeated for it to help.
Anyone using it to gauge the wear on the equipment?

Thanks

Booker57,

I do it but not to detect wear so much as when to change the oil.
You do get wear infomation as well as moisture, antifreeze, etc.
contaminants that can indicate upcomming problems. I also
find it interesting /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif.

Here's the place I've been using;

Many of the Cat dealers have inhouse labs. Might be closer and quicker than sending it out. I tried it years ago. At that time there wasn't a comparison for synthetic oil. For the average person, I don't think the sample kits are as available as they could be.

When you have large trucks and heavy equipment that you put a lot of miles and hours on, the tests are worthwhile. Truckers can use them to save money by adjusting oil change intervals. Contractors get a heads up on when an engine or other major component is getting to the point that maintenance is going to be needed to avoid a breakdown at a possibly inopportune time.

For the average Joe who takes care of his equipment and doesn't put the hours on that a business does it probably isn't worthwhile unless you find out you have a dud design engine in a new vehicle that you expect to have problems with. Then the test data might be useful when you go eyeball to eyeball with the manufacturer. You could prove the engine was experiencing internal problems way before it should have in spite of following the manufacturer's recommended maintenace (which you followed).

Darren's points are well taken...

I looked at that site and figure that, for $19 plus postage, I would rather just use the two engine oil filters and two gallons of Shell RotellaT oil it will buy, and change my oil more frequently. My Kubota B2910 take just over a gallon of oil...

That is because I bought my tractor new. It would be a great tool to use if I bought an unknown, used tractor...

I don't know about your area. However, I use the local CAT dealer where analysis can be had for $11.00 a throw postage paid. They test engine oil, gear oil and transmission/hydraulic fluid.

Analysis does tell you if you have a potential problem by letting you know about wear treands and if your oil is holding up.

Several web sites discuss analysis of oil.
