Tractor
Kubota 5040 with FEL
Hey everyone,

I am looking to sell my tractor and was wondering if anyone has any dealings with buying/selling tractors on ebay? I've sold some of my implements on craigslist but it looks like I'll need to do something different to sell my tractor. There seems to be a couple of comparable sized tractors on there with bids that I would be comfortable with selling mine for. I was just curious if anyone else had any experiences selling something worth $30k on ebay?

i sell and buy quite a few things on Ebay, but as a buyer i would be very very careful of buying something that expensive on an auction site. that is just MHO . i would need to see the item an am quite sure most would also. but a lot of folks sell cars and such on ebay. You could give it a try but make sure you cover all the bases and make sure you CYA:D

Like Frank said, most people would want to see the tractor in person. But, I think it may be worth a shot, because you are exposing your ad to most people within driving distance. I wouldn't mind driving a couple hours to look at a tractor if it looks like what I'm looking for.

It also helps to have lots of pictures and as detailed a description as possible. I get a kick out of ebay auctions for cars, trucks, etc. with no picture! Makes you wonder what people are thinking.

I've sold many iems on eBay inlucing a $30,000 car without any problems. I would not hesitate to sell a tractor on eBay. Where else do you have acess to so many buyers?

I have bought two JD tractors on eBay. I was pleased with both transactions. The first I drove to North Carolina and paid cash. The second I bought and had shipped from Tampa, FL unseen. It had a few little problems but nothing major. I will do it again in a minute.

If you need a shipper I met a good guy with low rates. He runs from South Florida to Michigan every week. Let me know if you need him. thomas@gulfofmexico.com

If your going to do it host your photos on
FREE eBay Auction Management, Auction Templates, Auction Tools, and Unlimited Image Hosting
They have free hosting of numerous hi res photos where ebay charges you for more then one and again for large photos. I have bought several pieces of heavy equipment off ebay, and sold a few item. Good photos really help the buyer.
I still like to inspect the equipment, so I generally travel with trailer after the auction and make payment and pickup in person. I have never had to back out on a purchase but some sellers offer "walk away with no hard feeling" others ask for the cost of listing the item back if the buyer walks away.
Others want 500 or 1000 down immediately. I have never paid that, I have alway just said see you at 3 pm tomorrow, I'll bring certified funds or cash.

Yes, I've sold a tractor on eBay. Also a motorcycle and a camper. We got good people that won the auctions, all sight unseen except for the pictures. The motorcycle went to a guy in Connecticut, the camper to Upper Sandusky Ohio and the tractor to Tennesee. All smooth deals. That was before a lot of the scammers got their fingers in peoples accounts on big ticket items. We've used eBay alot besides those dealings and have had very little issues.

I've bought and sold a bunch of smaller items on EBAY. I tried to sell one tractor but never got my reserve. I bought a non-running tractor on EBAY 2 years ago with the understanding it was a parts tractor. In 332 purchases and 95 sales I've had trouble with 2 purchases and 2 sales. My ratio of good buys to bad buys isn't that good when I see items in person before buying/selling at a local sale. All in all, not a bad way to sell stuff. It just ain't any fun if and when you're the 1 in 10,000 that has a bad selling experience and it happens to be an expensive item. Just keep one thing in mind when dealing on EBAY.

IF IT SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS.

As for big things, I've sold two tractors and one motorhome on e-bay. All went quite well. I did have a lot of correspondence with the bidders during the bidding process. I also had a number of jerks asking questions and trying to low-ball me.

Yeah, that will happen all the time with guys wanting to know your reserve or if they can buy it now, but then they never bid on it.

I bought my tractor with fel, backhoe, rotary cutter, box blade and post hole digger on eBay. Also bought a really nice Arctic Cat 4x4 ATV. Had one of my Harleys on eBay but didn't get my reserve. Just sold a large business phone system for big bucks the other day. I must be one of the lucky ones not having had any problems buying or selling ... knock on wood.

I sold my JD 870 on ebay with no problems. His money was good, my tractor was as advertised, so we had a smooth transaction.
I think a lot of folks set unrealistic prices on ebay and then are dumbfounded when their items don't sell or they misrepresent what they are selling.

You might want to consider where you're located. I tried to sell a car on ebay, but the main snag was that no one wanted to come to Western NY to get it. I spent the week answering more emails than I care to remember, and in the end I had many people telling me the car was in great shape and priced right, but they didn't want to pay to have it shipped, but didn't want to come and get it either. So, over 1500 watchers, but in the end...no bids. We also bought a car on ebay. Luckily it was located about two hours from us at a large dealership, so we were able to go drive it and see it. Good Luck.

I've sold several cars/ trucks and some equipment on eBay. It's not always a miserable experience but it's been bad more times than it's been good. Folks bid; you chase them around on email only to find that they didn't realize how far away you were, they didn't see in your description that it needed work, they don't have a way to move it, they forgot they were leaving for iraq, their married sister showed up in town for a bowling tournament.

And of course eBay keeps its listing fees.

eBay is great for small parts but now I'll only sell larger items for other folks and IFF they agree to do all of the followup.

I'd get rid of the "PROBABLY". If it seems too good to be true, IT IS!

If it seems almost too good to be true, it probably is.

I'd love to buy a tractor or implement off e-bay, but I've never found anything I wanted any closer than 500 miles or so. I wouldn't buy any high dollar item without seeing it personally or without some kind of concrete enforcable guarantee.

I've sold 2 cars on ebay, first was a breeze, no haggling after the buyer saw it, left very pleased with it. 2nd car, I had numerous e-mails offering me 1/3 to 1/2 my asking price if they came with cash in hand. First buyer never showed to pick the car up, 2nd buyer bought on "Buy It Now" price, came with cash in hand, left happy.

I've been monitoring eBay tractor and implement auctions for more than a year now. I'd say 99% of the items I would want to bid on are out-of-state, more than 500 miles distant. Shipping cost becomes a siginificant issue once the item is located more than a few hours down the road. But I remain optimistic that I'll find something on eBay one of these days.

Meanwhile I try to hit the farm equipment auctions and continually check the local tractor dealers to see what they have on the used equipment lot.

You may want to do some homework and have a shipping company lined up. It makes the sale easier for the buyer.

Also there are scammers that will pay with fraudulent bank checks. Color laser printers are cheap! Take pictures of the person and their drivers license. Funds would have to clear before I would release 30K of equipment to a person I just saw for the first time!

I bought my tractor at tractorhouse.com withouth ever seeing it, but looked on Ebay too. If I'd found what I wanted there I would have bought it. As for the "without ever seeing it" part, well.... I had many many conversations with the seller (a dealer, not a private sell), and felt comfortable enough to pull the trigger. The only problem is that I just simply didn't have a clue what I was doing and quite frankly got lucky to get a great machine. I'd still go through the internet but would want to see it now.

I always get the license plate number of the vehicle when buying from strangers. This is after buying counterfeit lift tickets for skiiing. I got a snowmobile ride with security, got to warm up in the middle of the day for about a 1/2 hour during some light interrogation. Seven Springs didn't even charge us for new lift tickets.
