Hey all, hoping someone on here will have seen this before and know how/what it's used for. I found this around the barn. My FIL used to have a super A, 140 and years ago a JD 4010 I think it was.

I am hoping it is used to clear weeds out of the rows.

Also if someone has used this before do you mount it with the spurs pointing out? How deep does it run? Surface or all the way down?

It has a 1" shank so I could mount them on my cultivator mount.

rolling cultivator, Is it "gangs" of 5 tines? or is it much wider? Usually one on the left and one on the right side of the plants, angled inward to help hill up soil under corn.

Twisted and set at an angle, they weeds and hill dirt really well. If set straight, we've used them to break up hard pack crust (after a packing rain in loamy soil).

Thanks for the definition.

It is a gang of 5 tines. So when angling the front is pointing out? I was thinking of trying to use this for weeding stuff like lettuces, cabbage, peppers until they get too tall for going under the tractor.

Trying to work smarter not harder. :D

Last Saturday I used my disc blades to hill up my taters, peppers, cabbage, lettuces etc. So I was able to get some weeding done with that. It kinda left clumps of weed clods around though. So I was hoping it may help with that.

Thanks for the speedy responses.

THANK YOU for posting that. they say a picture is worth a thousand words, a video must be ten fold more... I can see clearly now how it works and how I will be using it.

It’s what’s left of a Rotary Hoe.
Use was to weed just planted corn, beans, etc without damaging crop or to stir crusted over ground allowing seedlings to sprout.
Barely touched the ground enough for tips to flick the shallow weeds out leaving the deeper rooted crop.
Faster the better.

Definitely a rolling cultivator, either mounted on the Super A or 140 cultivator or a unit off a Lilliston larger 3 pt. model. Didn't watch the video, but when plants are small you set them to throw dirt away from plants, when plants like corn get bigger to angle them to hill dirt up around the stalks.

I cultivated several hundred acres of silage corn for a Dairy farmer back in the early 70's with a 4-row Lilliston on an IH 706 w/tricycle front end. There was a row gauge that bolted to the side frame, basically an upsidedown square "U". I sat in the seat while they slid it, so it was over a row on the right side, in the position I was setting in the seat.

The faster you run, the better they work. On the 706 I was running in 3rd gear with TA in direct. The last thing he told me the first time out, "Don't look back, a slight turn of the steering wheel and you'll be plowing out corn." It felt like I was running 40 mph, not being able to look back, until I got out a way and stopped to see how I was doing. I was right on the money, so we had it set right.

He came out after they finished milking to see how I'd done. Apparently pretty pleased, because he told me to keep going, you got lots of corn to cultivate yet.

If those fit the Super A/140 cultivators, they seem to be in demand for market growers. Larger 3 pt. units not so much anymore with them spraying.
