Definitely go with a normal weight rifle unless you are just interested in punching paper.
7-8lb rifle/scope combination is about right for all around use.
For the money Savage guns are hard to beat and they are tack drivers. If I ever purchase another rifle(I have plenty now) it would be the T3.Super nice action.
Any common caliber will work on deer sized game(.308,30-06.,.270 ect.).
I have a real soft spot for the 7MM/08,not much kick and a fine deer killer.
I have two 25/06's and they are very good but ammo is not as available as the others.
My SIL has a Howa in .270;it shoots well but I find it to be a little crude and heavy.

Any recommendations?

Don't have much more to add after the other great posts except for recommending Savage. Great rifles, very accurate!, great prices! and barrel swapping ability!!!!!!
