anyone own a howa rifle

My son owns a Weatherby Vanguard which is a Howa 1500 and he really likes it. It didn't come with a scope, so he put an old Redfield on it.

They are a solid rifle. Well built, excellent steel, old school Mauser pattern bolt action rifle.

The Weatherby Vanguard is made by Howa of Japan.

I owned the Howa 1500 varminter .243 for several years, I bought it for $500 with the intent to do some very long range prairie dog shooting. Never happened so I traded it in to Cabela's for $475 on another safe queen. To your question it was a very well made rifle with better fit & finish than my Remington 700. The Japanese made Howa 1500 has the same basic action as the Remington but it's only drawback is parts are not interchangeable. One plus is the Howa bolt is supposedly stronger than the stock remmy, not sure that matters in the caliber your looking at. If you not looking for cheap after market parts available for the Remington 700 I would rate the Howa a Best Buy.

I guess I'm a bit spoiled and have always preferred Leupold.
