Anyone install an oil cooler on a BX?

My BX23 and BX 22 never had this issue. My BX2200 has this issue a lot. Everything suggested as potential problems have been checked and replaced, serviced, or functioning normal. I have made sure the radiator fins and intake mesh and screen are clean, then mow in green grass without much dust or fluff, but if it’s hot and mowing thick grass at WOT, it will definitely run hot per the gauge. It will often be right at the red line and occasionally crosses it a bit. I have occasionally stopped mowing, opened the hood, reduced load, and allowed it to cool down. But this is definitely a reported concern with certain models of the BX more than other models of the BX. Dealer says it’s the way these BX 2200 run and not of concern.

As commented on many times above, the OP is basing everything on the temperature gauge reading, without doing anything to verify if it is accurate or not.

Seems logical that somehow verifying the reading, even if simply replacing the gauge itself, would be a good first step in the process of determining what is really going on...

If high temp is accurate (which it probably is) ...These little radiators have to be periodically removed and properly washed in my opinion. This is regardless of how much you blow it out, you just can't get to every nook and cranny and eventually it needs pulled, set outside on some saw horses, and soaked good.

My 2 cents :)

I'll have to remember to tell my BX that...

After 20 years it does not run hot unless I let stuff build up on the radiator. I just vacuum it off as needed, but once I did put some soap on it and spray it out with a garden hose...

Certainly will not be pulling the radiator out, unless something happens where I need to replace it.

Is the radiator clean? I mean, just blowing it off doesn't get what could be in between the fins. Do you have a radiator genie or something to really clean the radiator? Can you easily see light through it?

Are you running at full throttle? They cool best when running at wide open throttle when mowing. It sounds counter intuitive, but that's what the dealer instructed me to do. I mow when 100 degrees and don't have an overheating issue.

My '24 runs toward the top of the temp gauge on a hot day. Keeping the radiator clean w/a long-nosed nozzle and air (from a scuba tank and modified first stage) helps.

Haven't read back through the whole thread. Perhaps this has been mentioned: what really helps is keeping the fan belt snug and replaced as needed. Those things wear "skinny" and tend to slip. The fan is turning - so it looks OK - but not at full RPM. Really makes a difference on my little BX.

Another thing to try is to remove the side cowling on the engine. This helped to increase the airflow through the radiator and kep the engine cooler, just a thought

In hindsight that's a little extreme I guess. Remove and wash as needed :)
