Parking is for cars and the plan is to reduce cars.. plenty of projects with reduced parking or no parking requirement as parking only encourages cars...

Looks like I need to take time off and make the rounds of city hall... they have just recently started having more regular office hours post pandemic

It is not the city I recognize with the camps, walls of graffiti and dumping.
If you're taking time off and make the rounds of city hall, what are your relatives paying you to do this?

When my mom died over 20 years ago, my dad was 70. They had a 4 door sedan, and soon after after mom died, dad was the "given" member family to drive most of his immediate family around because even though his siblings and my mom's siblings had children, guess what? Those children moved away and they wouldn't help their parents so my father was kind of "stuck" playing taxi driver.

My fathers solution? 2 door coupe, small back seats, but enough trunk to carry his golf clubs. When the children of his and his wife's siblings called and asked if he could drive their parents to a family event, he just had to tell them he only had room really for one passenger because the back seats were too small to make a 2 hour drive for someone over the age of 70.

Dad could come across as a prick by what I just said of him, but for over 10 years he would visit his sister in the nursing home and bring her favorite KFC chicken EVERY weekend so she could have lunch even though she drove him bat crap crazy at times (even when she complained when he came down to visit us and he wasn't around that particular Sunday).

Ultrarunner, if you were my father, sometimes it sounds as if you family is using you because it's convenient for them. No disrespect intended.

The reality is if your aunts and uncles actually appreciated you, they wouldn't be asking you to buy them out, they would just give you the property and say "take care of it" and if you can make money doing so, split the money accordingly.

When dad passed in 2000 after a long bout of cancer he was still at work after Chemo in his 70's... saying it's his life and wanted to leave something behind for mom...

3 generations worked there with me being the only one from the 3rd generation.

Dad and Grandparents would never believe how the city has changed for the worse.

There were two properties and 24 years ago I wanted to quit claim the auto property to uncle and have uncle quit claim the adjoining 3 unit less value building... clean and simple deal but I caught hell from all sides so it never happened.

It wouldn't be the first time I read the writing on the wall.

The post office wanted the property 35 years ago... lease or buy but youngest uncle said no because he was in his 50's and aside from the Marine Corps it was his only job.

Spending the day there yesterday making trailer runs brought back many good memories of my grandfather and dad... learned much working as the gopher after school and summers.

The post office even wanted the property 35 years ago... lease or buy but youngest uncle said no because he was in his 50's and had only worked there...
You feel obligated and I get that.

My dads sister really drove my dad BS crazy and yet he was there for her every Sunday with her KFC meal at the nursing home.

It was the same aunt who shunned my mother because my parents weren't of the same religion, and yet after my mom died, dad took care of his sister.

FYI, my dad caught hell himself when the family home had to be sold because of his sister thinking she had the right to inherit the place only because she was the oldest child in the family (not the one in the nursing home mind you).

If you were my father, this is what I would tell you...

Sell all of your assets and move (perhaps to Panama) and enjoy what you have.

I'm not from Oakland, but I cannot believe the mess I've seen on YouTube videos nor does it make sense that they threaten large fines to you over some minor graffiti when other properties appear to be trash dumps.

Some charities may not want a property formerly used as a car lot for fear of unknown environmental cleanup issues if oil or antifreeze or whatever got dumped. Not saying there are any, but that's one reason a charity may hesitate about accepting direct ownership plus having to deal with sale of the property and dealing with the city in the meantime.

Some charities still accept donations of some properties like accepting a donation of a larger parcel of land for use as a public park.

Tempting… I had ticket in hand for 2 week getaway to the Philippines with invitations to stay in several places… co-workers and my retired military friends…

They all say they are not coming back except for one that did to take care of ailing parents… that is if you can adjust to heat/humidity.

I here right now… odd, but I feel a connection being here… been in the family 82 years… through WWII to the present and grandpa was renting during the Depression and put his heart into the place…

The bus shelter on the corner is covered in graffiti…

My plan at city hall is to ask what’s changed and why force another business to leave?

This news story gave me an idea… maybe I can get media interest and even interview with city…

Not now I’m sure because it’s dysfunctional with mayor recall and District Attorney recall and council member races…

I think it may have been an English author who said that we spend the first half of our lives trying to get away from home and the second half trying to get back.

Those two countries aren't on my list. The pic I attached was from somewhere else.

That said, I loved my father and he loved me, but for 13 years I couldn't convince him to move in with us when he was single and living by himself after my mom died. He didn't move until he fractured his back and then basically had to.

Point being, I know I'm not going to convince you to move ;)
