Anyone had issues with diesel/heating oil going bad??

The only problem I've had in 40+ years was when non-winterized got down to 40 below. Get's sort of thick.
I've an '88 Ford E350 7.3 diesel that I am "saving" for a retirement project. I only drive it about 20 MILES per year to get it inspected. It's had the same fuel in the tanks since 2009 and I just fired it up today on the first try (after I charged the batteries).

Depends on where you live. Agricultural states demand high bio content and that has caused difficulty. Example here in Minnesota B20 is required except from November through March when I believe it drops to B2 due to bio problems being especially bad in winter. Now being a grower of crops used to make bio diesel - it's a tough call.

Oh yea Bio Diesel it turns into pudding in cold weather.

Back in 1999 (not a misprint) I purchased about 200 gallons of standard, red dyed diesel fuel to run my MF 235D tractor. I loaded it into a 250 gallon storage tank which was uncovered and exposed to the elements. I treated the fuel (but don't remember with what) and have been using it ever since. In 2010 I got a used 350 gallon tank and ran the fuel through a filter into clean 55 gal drums. After I got rid of the old tank, got the new one painted and erected, I ran the diesel through another filter back up into the new tank. I run about 14 gallons per year into the MF and it starts every time I turn the key just as it always has.

Having said that, my dad pumped old diesel into a new (at the time) Dodge pickup with a Cummins in it and wound up with some major repairs.

Over a number of years, I bought #2 diesel (home heating oil) from a number of people who were changing over to nat gas. (or the folks who bought the property was switching over and wanted the "in ground" tanks removed) Much of it was old and all of it cost me .50 cents a gallon, and NONE of it caused me any problems in the diesels I used it up in.

Some of those tanks had been in the ground with diesel in them, for many years...

It is ironic I just read this and had an issue with my fuel. I keep on hand 3 55 gal drums of fuel that are sealed and kept in doors. I had them filled one year ago with heating oil which is Low sulphur diesel here in NH. I just filled up my tier 3 tractor and on a cold start it blew blue smoke for 30 secs until it cleared up. Once running it is fine. Definitely fuel related. My guess is the cetane lowered causing a delay in combustion hence the blue smoke on the cold start ( do not worry blue smoke is not oil). So i guess it does go bad in a way. It is pumped through a water filter.
