I've a lot of logs & I like mushrooms.
In this old thread https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/projects/225243-shiitake-growing-logs-2.html there was a good discussion.
Does anyone who is presently involved in Shiitake (or other edible type) growing on logs have some good sources for spawn?
I should have started a decade ago.

I inoculated 19 4-6in diameter oak logs with shiitake spores about 3 years ago. It's pretty magical! About 6 months to 1 year later you get a PILE of shiitake. A bit labor intensive on the front end but if you have friends and the right tools it goes pretty quick. I consider it well worth the effort. My goal was to do about 30 more this spring but ran out of time. If you get in a good rotation and do 15 logs per year you will have more mushrooms than you could ever consume. I believe my best harvest was 96 shiitake about the size of my palm. I got my spawn out of a place in WI. The next time I do it I will get them from Mushroom People in Summerville, TN. Trying to keep it local ya know?

You have plenty of time to prepare as you should use logs cut from trees that are dormant. So get all your ducks in a row and get ready to do it this winter or spring. The only disadvantage to someone living in your climate is the harsh winter temperatures keeps the spores from spreading. Here in TN the spores will start doing their thing even in winter. Some people put them in their basements or just wait until spring. Good luck!

This guy is a great source of spawn and information. I don't have personal experience with the mushrooms but all the locals look up to him and he is known internationally
his name is John Donahgue. His assistant's name is Kim.
Northwest Mycological Consultants, Inc.

I cut and pasted the following from a page I found.

A tribute to getting to the bottom of the pile! (doing a bit of cleaning) This is the company we purchased our shiitake plugs from. The website is essentially nothing. You really need to call because the gentleman that runs the show really should talk to you. He knows mushrooms inside and out from my point of view. He sent us a little 22 page catalog (what I found at the bottom of the pile) when we were still in California. We didn't use it until we got to NC. Anyway, I really encourage all you wanna be shroomers to give this fella a buzz.

Gone are the days, when people didn’t have any special knowledge and equipment to grow mushrooms, even outside their home. I also had tried many times but failed. But today it’s not that anymore. In this era, we can get lots of information anywhere and the good thing is that information is free. There are lots of websites and articles where you can easily get the information to grow mushrooms. I grow Shiitake and Oyster Mushrooms for my business and buy logs from AGRINOON (FUJIAN) , and its doing really well. I can share some steps:
- First of all, get prepared to grow the mushroom
- You need to prepare your mushroom substrate
- Inoculation
- Incubation
- Fruiting
- And, Harvest & Growing More Crops

I inoculated logs this spring, so no harvest experience yet. I chose shiitake and pearl oyster on fresh-cut oak logs to start. I have mottling on the end of the logs, so I think that everything is working as it should - will know for sure this fall.

I bought spawn from Fungi Perfecti (fungi.com). They have a very extensive website with many types of mushroom spawn, indoor kits and other products. I do not have any experience with other suppliers, but I would buy from them again - good prices, products and fast shipping.
